Fire Station Tour

May 6, 2016 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

There’s actually a back story that goes along with the reason we went on a Fire Station Tour! I will share very briefly and then describe all the things we learned on our Fire Station Tour. Earlier that morning before 6:30 am lights and sirens came down our street! A two-story house two doors down on our side of the street was on fire. As soon as I heard and saw the fire trucks I got Riley out of bed. Eldest and Princess soon followed.

After the fire was out, the street was clear and we ate lunch we decided to head to the fire station for a tour.

Kindergarten Pumpkin Weighing Activity

October 22, 2015 By Thaleia 10 Comments

Today I would like to share with you a fun way to learn with a pumpkin. Big Red actually picked this pumpkin from our very own garden a few weeks ago. He brought it in all by himself. Since this was technically HIS pumpkin that he plans on making soup with I decided we should do something that was educational but not damaging to the pumpkin!

Preschool Prep: Science and Nature

Is Science and Nature part of your Preschool Prep? How do you teach Preschoolers about Science and Nature? Simple. Lots of hands-on exploration and activities. Children are naturally curious so build on that curiosity and you will be surprised at how much they will learn.

What is Preschool Prep?

Do you have a young child or two who has outgrown Tot School and is ready for Preschool? Have you looked at all the free online choices during your preschool preparation? Does thinking about preschool curriculum make your head spin? Well, I know that the amount of free “Letter of the Week” and “Themed” curriculum is astounding.

I am creating the Preschool Prep series to help other moms and caregivers out! I have spent lots of time researching and planning for Preschool for Lil’ Red and I want to pass on this wealth of knowledge and resources to my readers!

I plan to share a variety of ideas and ways to prepare yourself, your environment, and your child for preschool in a multi-part series. I could create a super long and over whelming post with tons and tons of ideas, but I do not want to add frustration to your Preschool Prep situation. I want to share ideas for learning letters, numbers, colors, shapes, name recognition, character studies, etc. I will share with you very simple activities you can create yourself or some items you could look for during garage sale season. I am hoping to lessen your time and the amount of money you spend by sharing what I am doing.

Science and Nature

{Spice Up Your Homeschool} PE: Try Tennis

Try Tennis

We recently (okay, a few months ago, lol) had a homeschool gym day through our local homeschol group that taught tennis and badminton skills. Both Eldest and Princess really enjoyed learning how to hold a racket and practice keeping their eye on the ball. They both did very well during the gym day and were excited to learn a new sport. I was glad they had fun and were learning new skills that they could help each other out with.

They begged to play tennis again as soon as we could! We only owned one racket so we set off to the Salvation Army Thrift Store. We found a racket with a bright neon pink handle and it was the right tag color for 50% off! Total score $1 for the racket plus tax. This week we headed to our local community college that has unused courts. Riley met us between work and college classes for an hour of tennis practice but with only two rackets and three tennis balls it wasn’t much fun. We once again stopped at the Salvation Army Thrift store on the way home and scored more sports equipment. Three more rackets for $1.99 plus tax each. A very frugal deal I say!

We found a local Tennis Center that was offering Tennis Camp three times a week for 1 hr. for 4 weeks at only $30 through a local city’s Summer parks program! Since Tennis lesson’s are normally $30 per lesson we signed Princess up for the Beginner Class. She has had so much fun meeting new friends. She loves it and has learned some new skills in a fun way. (Funny thing is she is almost 9 and she is one of the smaller kids in her class.) They play all sorts of games and do fun things to practice basic skills! The coaches are High School students or recent graduates who seem to have lots of knowledge and patience.

Beginning our Journey to Another Continent

Beginning our Journey to Another Continent

journey to another continent

We are not moving or actually going anywhere, but we can take a journey through a variety of activities. We are not Montessori but like to dabble a little bit in concepts like Work trays (Tot trays) and Continent Boxes.

I am always wanted to find new ways to spark learning an adventure in my children. I found out about Continent Boxes a few years ago but had no way of getting into a group since we are not a Montessori School or Family.

Montessori Continent BoxesGreat Continent Box ideas from Living Montessori Now!

A couple years ago my mom’s cousin went on a 3 week business trip and sent us a package of goodies from China plus 4 cd’s of pictures from Beijing, Shanghai, Thailand, and London. He included some currency, hotel brochures, and some little souvenirs. Boy what a treasure that was. My husband was sooo good about creating excitement and allowing each child to open one thing at a time. They had to try to guess what each things was before opening it. We cherish these items and realize we have never pursued finding more friends or relatives to collect world treasures for us.

multicultural package

Well, just recently I found out about Worldwide Culture Swappers! As much as I would like to jump right in and join  a group swap with four other families I thought starting off slow with a one family to one family swap would give us a chance to see if it really is for us without too much expense.

We are starting by swapping with a family in Australia and getting advice from a local family, Honey from Mondorfment. (Honey has hosted a Continent Swap before and has really great ideas to share. She will be blogging about them soon. I have also contacted a blogging friend, Neetu, from Singapore and she has agreed to swap with us in April. So we are off to a very good start!

I’m preparing our package by brainstorming, asking Honey tons of questions, asking our swap family what they would like and pinning like crazy!

Here are some suggestions from Chasing Cheerios:

– a letter from a child describing his/her life in his/her country…favorite foods, sports, activities, religious activities, daily schedule, school, vacations…anything that you or your child think would be interesting to a child in another country.

– Pics of your child in his home, etc. You don’t have to send close-up face pics if you are not comfortable doing so.

– Postcards, stamps, coins,

– craft, coloring sheets, small toys or games, small books

– cds of your child’s favorite music or books on cd

– recipes, pics of food specific to your region

– anything else that you think would be fun for a child to receive

What would your child/family like to receive from another country? We would love to have your suggestions and ideas:)
