There’s actually a back story that goes along with the reason we went on a Fire Station Tour! I will share very briefly and then describe all the things we learned on our Fire Station Tour. Earlier that morning before 6:30 am lights and sirens came down our street! A two-story house two doors down on our side of the street was on fire. As soon as I heard and saw the fire trucks I got Riley out of bed. Eldest and Princess soon followed.
After the fire was out, the street was clear and we ate lunch we decided to head to the fire station for a tour.
Did you know that firefighters have to do their own laundry after each fire? We didn’t until we were shown the laundry area at the fire station. There’s a set of washing machine and dryer for regular clothes. Then there’s a special machine for the fire suits that are worn to protect the fire fighters from the extreme heat of a fire.
Our local fire station house numerous fire trucks and a couple of ambulances. Each firefighter is trained to provide basic emergency medical care along with being able to help fight fires. Eldest, Princess, and Big Red got to sit in the back of the ambulance and see a variety of areas of a basic fire truck.
Firefighters sleep at the fire house during their shift. We were taken upstairs to see where they slept. Since our local station has a large company of firefighters including women there’s a large common room for the men, a small room for woman’s bed, and a separate room for shift chief.
(To read how Eldest and Princess made the news and why they received commemorative coins for the Fire Chief stay tuned!)
