With Spring definitely upon us we try to take advantage of being outdoors in nature every chance we get. The weather soared into the high 70’s and so I loaded up all four kids to check out the new bridge on our local walking path. They didn’t really know where I was taking them but after the short 5 minute drive we arrived at our destination.
My daughter figured out where we were going and was all excited. The boys got pretty excited too even though I have had complaints in the past about Nature Hikes, lol. I don’t care and take them out anyways. I told them this would count as PE, Science, and Language Arts if they drew me a picture of what they saw and wrote at least 3-5 sentences.
Both boys found sticks that resembled their favorite weapons, of course! Lil’ Red loved getting out of the stroller and looking at the river down below. We saw and heard birds but not any mammals or other wildlife. We saw lots of tiny yellow flowers and a few purple flowers sprinkled in. I plan to try to take the kids back each week to see how the forest changes after rainy days and dry days. I also want to go very early in the morning and at dusk to try to catch animals drinking from the river.
We found two very large benches just off the path which are part of the Natural Play Area which we will explore and share more with you! Very exciting to be able to “go off the path and down to the river to explore”. I can see many Spring and Summer days being spent here exploring and learning about nature. This is like our own personal oasis right in the city which helps fulfill this mom’s desire to be in the country without having to spend more then a dime or 2 in gas!
I hope you can find a nice nature area near you to take your children to hike and explore. Fresh air and sunlight are so very important aspects of childhood. Have a great weekend I know we will.
