Nothing quite like the satisfying feeling of digging in the dirt and growing your own food. This makes planting a garden with children a really great idea!
My youngest loves dirt! This morning I caught him playing in our garden supplies bag. He said, “Dig!” very clearly so I asked him if he wanted to help me plant the potatoes out front. He got excited and ran to the door. He helped with the trowel and kneeling pads and getting in the garden gloves out of the bag.
Once I removed all the bricks and pops off the large grey tarp we are ready to start digging. He was super excited the moment he saw the fresh dark cold dirt. I could not even distract him by pointing out the crickets and bugs that were crawling on the dirt!
Princess woke up and came out to help. She split the potatoes while I got the holes ready. Lil’ Red kept playing in the dirt until we started planting then he helped cover the plants.
I tried to get him to dig up some weeds but he was good squishing his toes in the dirt. I went on to pull more weeds then looked up to find he was eating dirt off the trowel! We did manage to plant 25 potato plants before 9:30 am! Quite the accomplishment.
What have you planted with your child? Do you offer them a place to dig?
