We are doing Anatomy for Science this year using Guest Hollow’s Anatomy as our guide. The first week we are learning about Cells for High School students and Our Bodies for Elementary students. Within this week’s lesson we are learning to take your temperature. Usually medical equipment is not allowed to be played with at our home but for educational purposes mom pulls out all the goods!
Since we own numerous thermometer’s I thought it would be good for each child to learn about each one and practice using a thermometer.
Thermometer’s that We Own:
Dr. Fresh Little Mermaid similar to this Dr. Morepen Digiflexi
Omron Jumbo Display Thermometer
Reli On Temple Touch Thermometer
Braun ThermoScan ear thermometer
While we do not own an actual rectal thermometer the flexible tipped thermometers are usually okay to use that way. We do not have an infant in the house and have never used a rectal thermometer although the doctor’s office has done so.
We did not buy all of these at once or even in the same year. We have seemed to collect them from time to time. We were given one when Big Red had a nurse visit at home after being brought home from the hospital. Our insurance at the time offered in home mommy and baby well checks. We purchased the Little Mermaid thermometer when Princess was a toddler! The ear and temple thermometer’s were added between Princess and Big Red being born. We even have a thermometer not listed or pictured that is in in our waterproof bag that used to be in our diaper bag. Since Lil’ Red is potty trained I have thrown that water proof bag in our beach bag or park bag while on trips like Kelley’s Island or park dates at local playgrounds.
I checked that each thermometer had working batteries last week to be sure we had enough for each child to use a thermometer on the rare chance that each would do this activity at the same time. Those thermometers that did not have working batteries I placed an order on Amazon for a pack of LR41 and LR44 batteries.
Since I wanted this to be a little more then a hands-on activity I thought I would create a worksheet to go along with this for each child to place in their homeschool portfolio’s. The worksheet asked some basic questions about where to take your temperature and types of thermometers. Some answers can be left up to interpretation.
Lil’ Red got the biggest thrill from being asked to check my temperature as well as his brother’s.
Big Red checked his temperature under his arm with the Little Mermaid thermometer while watching a show for school on Netflix.
