Mystery of History Volume 2 Resources

July 23, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

We will be using Mystery of History Volume 2 this next school year and wanted to share resources that we have found along the way. To make homeschooling less stressful I use the same Science and History for all four of my children. This year we will have grades Kindergarten, Fourth, Tenth and Eleventh. I will try to share resources for all ages that we might be using this year.

I used a very nice quarterly chart in order to keep track of the lessons as well as add in videos, novels and Scripture reading. I could not find a similar chart for MOH Volume 2 so I created my own. I will share the rough version with you in Word form so that you can edit it. I have added these to Google Drive so that you can access them. Please be sure to download a copy of them BEFORE editing.

Barb from Harmony Fine Arts offers free downloads and paid resources but gives a nice list of artists and composers to study during the Medieval and Renaissance time period. We will be using the list of composers to add some fun for the elementary brothers while the high school students will complete their Music Appreciation course. If you only want a short unit study then you can use the Renaissance Art Mini Unit.

“Give a man fish he will eat for a day.  Teach a man to fish, he will eat for the rest of his life.” Chinese Proverb.  This was our motto and quote when we took our first steps to start homeschooling our kids.  We didn’t want to give our kids education. We wanted to teach them how to learn and give them tools to apply learning so they can learn for the rest of their lives.

In my search for a method to use that fit our reasons for homeschooling, I came across The Well Trained Mind book by Susan Wise Bauer.  Four months later it was confirmed that this book is a real gem and fit our criteria for our homeschool journey.  Susan Wise Bauer said “A classical education is more than simply a pattern of learning, though. Classical education is language-focused; learning is accomplished through words, written and spoken, rather than through images (pictures, videos, and television). “

How I Taught My Son to Read

January 10, 2019 By Thaleia 2 Comments

Teaching a child to read can be a daunting task with all the methods, programs and apps available. I want to put your mind at ease that spending big bucks on a fancy program isn’t necessary. Buying a ton of flash cards or phonics books won’t make it easier. My secret to teaching my middle son to read is very simple. I read to him. Daddy read to him. Grandma read to him. Big sister read to him. Big brother read to him. We listen to lots of audiobooks and include timeless classics.

We read quality books at his comprehension level which is usually much higher than a child’s reading level. We own tons of board books for when our children are infants and toddlers and preschoolers. We own tons of picture books on all sorts of topics. We own leveled readers both of fiction as well as non-fiction. We own chapter books for slightly advanced beginners. But you do not have to own a ton of books to teach your child to read! You can use the library or maybe even swap books with a friend.

Free Benefits at Ohio Libraries

October 26, 2018 By Thaleia 2 Comments

Ohio offers a lot of libraries with all sorts of benefits or perks. Many people may only have a single library card from their local library but have you ever considered checking out other libraries in YOUR state? I happen to live in a county that does not offer a county-wide system but each town manages their own library. A few tie in with the larger Dayton Metro Public Library system but even having library cards from all of those isn’t enough for this frugal homeschool mama!

I have super long book lists for my not quite ready to read Kindergarten son to my teen daughter who is searching for a favorite genre. I personally have a list of audiobooks for parenting and homeschool encouragement that I want to tackle which I have added in the files of my Homeschool Beginners Facebook Group.. How can I accomplish this with a meager budget and near empty gas tank?

Why I Own Multiple Library Cards in Ohio

Simply by signing up for a few more library cards online at bigger library systems. I am going to share why I have library cards from Cleveland Public Library, Columbus Metropolitan Library, Toledo Lucas County Public Library and The Public Library of Cincinnati. I only had to actually step foot in a Cincinnati location the other two you can apply online for a card.

2018-2019 Homeschool Curriculum General Overview

August 23, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Each year during the Spring and Summer I think about the upcoming Fall and what it will bring for my children’s educations via homeschool curriculum. I try to look for new and interesting things to learn, study and experience. This year will be our first year that all four children will be “in school”.

homeschool curriculum 2018-2019

We started last year all learning the same Science and History which seemed to make my life a little bit easier. Last year we learned American History and Anatomy (loosley using Guest Hollow’s outline) while this year we will focus on Ancient History and Botany. We will use Mystery of History 1 and Guest Hollow’s Ancient History for book, video and activity ideas as well as Guest Hollow’s Botany.
