Potty Training Tips and Tricks

It’s been a few years since we were in the full-time potty training mode but this week Lil’ Red has been showing some more definite signs of desiring to potty train! He is insisting on wearing training underwear but is still having daily accidents! He also wants to learn to wipe with toilet paper which can be a tedious task even for a veteran mom such as myself.

Looking for some potty training tips and tricks? I’ve consulted the “experts” (other parents who have multiple children) and have been successful at potty training! Some of these tips might be so simple that you never thought about them while other’s might be so crazy it’s worth a try!

Very Successful but Crazy Potty Training Tips

“I would suggest making sure he has softer bowel movements. Fiber, water, magnesium,raisins, etc. So that it doesn’t hurt to go.”

“I always tried to find a fun activity to do while they sit on the pot. I would always stay in the room with them and make it a fun time with mom.”

“I don’t potty train. I buy the underwear and would ask if they wanted to try, but I let them decide when they were ready. For my girls, that was around 2.5 years old. For my son, that was the month before his 4th birthday.”

“I let mine run in just a t shirt. Three kids, not a lot of messes. If they don’t have anywhere else to go they tend to gravitate to the potty.”

“I think the key is if they are showing interest. My son had all of the cues, so it made it very, very easy.”

“My son was potty trained at 18 months. I let him run around naked and within a week, it was done (even night time).”

“I trained my boys on the full size toilet with a smaller seat if needed and I turned my boys around backwards and sat them on the toilet”

“Try putting fruit cheerios or fruit loops in to bowl and have him “sink” them.”

“Squirt food coloring into the toilet bowl and it will change color when he hits the food coloring with pee.”

 

Have you tried any of these potty training tips or tricks? I am in the process of potty training our 4th child but it’s been awhile since our 3rd child was potty trained. One thing I do know with children is the often over use of toilet paper and the possibilities of a clogged toilet! Even with the big kids using too much toilet paper can be a BIG problem when you only have one bathroom.

We have actually used disposable training pants with all of our children so far. I like the convenience of them while away from home or while on vacation. It’s hard for a little one to alert you to their need to potty in enough time to get to an exit and an actual restroom! When Princess was little we always kept a small potty seat in the back of our van so we could just pull off the side of the road or in case we were stuck in a traffic jam. We also made sure to have some toilet paper and wipes handy as well! Nothing is worse then a potty accident in a car seat on a long trip!

There are many theories to consider when potty training but you must go with your gut as a parent and WORK WITH YOUR child and NOT against them or their personality!
