Frog Life Cycle Drawing and Frog Puppets #NatureBookClub #NatureStudy

May 20, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

This month’s Nature Book Club theme is Amphibians and Reptiles. We tried to find real-life creatures to exam but we were unsuccessful with our busy schedule. We have been successful in the past which you can read our frog catching and river exploration.

frog life cycle books and puppets We own a plastic frog life cycle set and a few books about frogs so we could still learn about them. The books From Tadpole to Frog goes over the life cycle of a frog nicely as does The Magic School Bus Hops Home and Curious George Tadpole Trouble. My boys have enjoyed each of these books.

frog life cycle drawingMy boys love learning about science and using tools like magnifying glasses and life cycle toys for exploration. I set up this activity on our kids picnic table on our front porch since the weather was so nice.

We own many sets of colored pencils from various brands which allowed the boys a nice choice of greens and blues to work with while drawing the frog life cycle. Each child had his own clipboard with plain printer paper so they could work at their own pace and draw what they saw while exploring the frog life cycle set.

I had made felt puppets many years ago while I was in college and decided to complete a set of them for the frog life cycle for my boys to enjoy!

Learning about Monarch Butterflies and Raising Monarch Caterpillars #NatureBookClub #NatureStudy

April 20, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

We have loved discovering Monarch caterpillars and Monarch butterflies in our garden each year. Last year we were able to raise and release four Monarch butterflies throughout the Summer. We usually do not see many butterflies until early to mid-June from looking through a few years worth of pictures. Learning about Monarch butterflies and raising Monarch caterpillars is a great Summer activity as well as Citizen Science project.

We live in Ohio and many of the Monarch caterpillar’s and Monarch butterfly’s food sources are not blooming until that time of year. We usually do not even look for Monarch’s until the Praying Mantis’ have hatched and our garden is growing well. Last year the first picture we took of a Monarch was June 28 on a bright Purple Coneflower.

We decided to try our hand at finding Monarch caterpillar’s, raising them and releasing the Monarch butterfly since we have seen them around our house for the last few years. I was the one to find the tiny caterpillar’s munching on some Honeyvine Milkweed (Cynanchum laeve) near our vegetable garden.

Migration Books for Kids #NatureBookClub #Booklist

April 1, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Spring is a great time to get outside and learn about nature. Children are naturally curious about the world around them so when they see birds flying across the sky or insects in the garden they will wonder how they got there. Migration happens for many animals and insects and is a fun topic to learn about.
