February 5, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

If you have some sky and space lovers in your house like I do then you will want to be sure that they have some basic sky and space equipment. I have scoured Amazon to bring you a list of some fun and educational items related to sky and space. I am hoping that your family will enjoy some of these items as much as my children have.

  1. Basic Telescope– You do not need to spend a fortune on a really good telescope to encourage your young sky observer. Starting with a much simpler and cheaper telescope  will allow you to see if a larger investment is worth it down the road. Or you could take your family to an Observatory or Star Gazing event as well as check with your local library to see if they offer equipment to borrow.
  2. Binoculars– Many times during the year you can observe some items in the sky with a pair of binoculars. We own multiple pairs of binoculars and share with you how to pick a pair of binoculars for your child.
  3. Solar System– A nice 3D solar system can bring learning about each planet a little more real to life for your child.
  4. Space Station Play Set- We picked up a set many years ago when our teens were younger. It’s been played with by all four kids! You can choose from a simple toob with 12 items or a huge bucket with 60 pieces.
  5. Books about Sky and Space- There’s a ton of great books both picture books and field guides so I dedicated an entire post to a list of sky and space books for kids.
  6. Constellation Flashcards– This unique tin holds the Qurious Space game that can be played by up to 18 people!
  7. Space Science Kit- The Magic School Bus offers a nice kit called The Secrets of Space for children ages 5-12.
  8. Women of NASA LEGO Set- If your child wants to learn about the women who have been a part of space history then this Ideas Women of NASA LEGO Set.
  9. Field Guide- We own the National Audubon Society First Field Guide Night Sky edition.

I hope your family enjoys some of these sky and space educational items while exploring and learning about stars, planets and the history of space.

Free Benefits at Ohio Libraries

October 26, 2018 By Thaleia 2 Comments

Ohio offers a lot of libraries with all sorts of benefits or perks. Many people may only have a single library card from their local library but have you ever considered checking out other libraries in YOUR state? I happen to live in a county that does not offer a county-wide system but each town manages their own library. A few tie in with the larger Dayton Metro Public Library system but even having library cards from all of those isn’t enough for this frugal homeschool mama!

I have super long book lists for my not quite ready to read Kindergarten son to my teen daughter who is searching for a favorite genre. I personally have a list of audiobooks for parenting and homeschool encouragement that I want to tackle. How can I accomplish this with a meager budget and near empty gas tank?

Why I Own Multiple Library Cards in Ohio

Simply by signing up for a few more library cards online at bigger library systems. I am going to share why I have library cards from Cleveland Public Library, Toledo Lucas County Public Library and The Public Library of Cincinnati. I only had to actually step foot in a Cincinnati location the other two you can apply online for a card.
