Reasons Why You SHOULD Visit a Nature Center

February 28, 2014 By Thaleia 2 Comments

Reasons Why You SHOULD Visit a Nature Center This Year!

I love nature. I love Nature Center’s and FREE Programs. I try to DRAG (sometimes almost literally!) my children to Nature programs as much as possible. (They really do enjoy them but not in all sorts of weather like their mom). I’m the nature nut of my family so to speak but that is fine with me.

We finally made it to our local nature center’s (Brukner Nature Center) monthly program called Creature Feature. We became member’s of our local nature center via a coupon offer back in the Summer, but with a new baby venturing out has been limited.
It was a 60 minute program all about one type of animal. A great in-depth introductory to the critter of the month so to speak. Eldest is going to create a video to show with you all about the Saw-Whet Owl.

We all wanted to share our reasons to visit a Nature Center:

Get up close to animals.

Hands-on activities. Feeling feathers, exploring bones, viewing fossils are all apart of what ours has to offer right in the main entry!

Talk with experts and enthusiasts. If you spend any amount of time at a nature center then you are sure to run into somone who will bend your ear. You may get a tall tale or lots of details and information.

Learn something new each time.

Free and Cheap programs. Sunday is free day for anyone to visit Brukner Nature Center!

Great place to volunteer. Our local nature center allows volunteers as young as 11 years old.

Home School Convention and Lost Children

February 27, 2014 By Thaleia 10 Comments

So you are all set and excited to attend your local Home School Convention, but what if your child becomes lost? I have heard some conventions have grown so big that it’s just a sea of humanity! Here’s what my friend Honey from Honey’s Life has to say about small children and conferences:

“I love conventions and conferences but there’s no way I think they’re appropriate for little ones. I’ve seen children bumped, tripped, stepped on and even hit in the head due to the crush that comes with really great ones. I think babies & tots should be in a pack or wrap or they’re with someone else that’s hanging out on the very ends where there isn’t a crowd. (in a stroller) This gives you the chance to experience the convention while keeping kids safe and happy which prevents meltdowns and becoming overwhelmed. Personally the only ages that should be at a conference are babies and teens. It’s just safer.

Have you considered making an ID for each of your family members? You can create a free ID from Homeschool Buyers Co-op! Yes, that’s right you can upload the pictures of each of your family members and their names, grades, etc. You can then save and print right at home for FREE or order a hard plastic version if you prefer!

Introduce Art at an Early Age

February 20, 2014 By Thaleia 6 Comments

I have to admit that my hubby has thought I was crazy to allow our children to experience art so young. Yes, it might be a little crazy to allow a 6 month old the opportunity to paint but I think it’s a good idea. Maybe it’s the Preschool Teacher in me but I’ve allowed all of our children this experience. It is almost Baby C-4’s turn! As soon as my baby’s can hold themselves in a sitting upright position I allow them to paint!

Unfortunately I was unable to find picture proof of all of their earliest art experiences of the oldest three, but did find Eldest’s. I searched high and low through multiple Cd’s of pictures to no avail. I provided Eldest with some washable finger paint right on his tray. This way he was strapped securely in his seat so I could help ensure his safety and easily to clean up.

I will share with you another art experience I did find of both Eldest and Princess. These pictures were taken when Eldest was 4 years old and Princess was 2 1/2 years old. They are painting picture frame mats for Mother’s day I think.

Why Art at an Early Age?

Well, first of all childhood should be all about PLAY and exploration. Children who are given more experiences will be ahead of the crowd in a lot of areas of growth and development. Art helps with color exploration and fine motor control. Eldest has a great pencil grasp on his paint brush and loved mixing colors.

Princess has a deep concentrated expression on her face while she figures out how to open the bottle of paint. She has to concentrate on squeezing just the right amount of paint into the palette.

Looking through these old pictures makes me realize how much MORE art we need to do. I have had Lil’ Red draw things before. Just the other day he wanted to play Minecraft  to update his “world”, but I asked him to draw the things he wanted to change FIRST! He did do a wonderful job drawing and then narrating what he drew.

Free Black History Month Resources

February 19, 2014 By Thaleia 3 Comments

Free Black History Month Resources

We have not done a ton of learning in regards to Black History Month or famous African Americans but definitely intend to. My son gets very upset when learning just the slightest bit about slavery and the Civil War. I am very happy that he feels all people regardless of skin color should not be owned or mistreated. I know it will upset him greatly the more he learns about how cruel some people have been and can be. Nonetheless we will delve into this topic more and more each year.

black history

I am sure that my family isn’t the only one wanting to have some free resources handy for Black History not just during February! I searched around to find some unique and easy to use resources.
