Impromptu Science: Going on a Bug Hunt

May 28, 2015 By Thaleia

One morning my little boys were getting a little stir crazy and so was mommy. I decided to take them outside to hunt for bugs. We had recently bought new magnifying glasses from Dollar General and had bug barns that we made at Home Depot. They both thought this was a wonderful idea. They both hurried to get their socks and shoes and jackets on. No fussing and fighting just plain fun.

Ways Your Teen Can Earn Money This Summer

May 27, 2015 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

If you have a teen who isn’t quite old enough for a traditional job, then you may have to help encourage them to think outside the box and brainstorm. There are all sorts of ways your teen can earn money this summer. First take an inventory of their talents, skills, and interests. Do they prefer pets over children then pet sitting might be a good fit. Is your teen more active and fit then lawn care or dog walking might foot the bill.

ABC’s of American History: U is for Ulysses S. Grant

May 26, 2015 By Thaleia

Ulysses S. Grant is an interesting figure in American history. For many years historians had relegated him to the bottom of the presidential pile. And he still frequently is listed as the worst president of all time.

Ulysses_Grant

Laying all of that aside, if it weren’t for his military genius the United States would look very different today from how it looks now. Let’s take a minute and explore how his time remembers him.

Ulysses S. Grant portrayed in Lee’s surrender

Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomatox

Art is used to portray people’s opinions and what they think is important. So, let’s look at how artists of Grant’s time portrayed him.

Look at the drawing and answer a few questions:

  1. Who is in the light and who is in the shadows?
  2. Which side has greater numbers? (As a hint General Lee is on the left with the white hair, the Confederate generals are behind him)
  3. Who is given the focus of this drawing? (One way to tell, where are people facing)

Taking your answers to all of these questions, which side do you think the artist felt was right?

This illustration was commissioned by the owner of the house the surrender took place in. After the surrender soldiers took many of his possessions so they could have a souvenir of the surrender. He attempted to regain some of his money by commissioning and selling this drawing. Does this change some of your answers to the questions?

Ulysses S. Grant’s memorial

Ulysses Grant memorial studying art and history

After the Civil War, and after Grant’s presidency monuments were erected everywhere in honor of him. When he died thousands contributed money to build him an impressive monument in Washington D.C.

  1. Look at the statues surrounding President Grant on his horse. What aspect of Ulysses S. Grant do you think they are choosing to emphasize?
  2. Which statues did the architect put closest to him? What direction are the statues facing? Why do you think they are facing that way?
  3. Compare the close-ups of the soldiers with Grant’s face? What differences do you see?
  4. Compare the soldiers on the frieze to the statues flanking Grant’s statue. What are the differences?

Now compare Grant’s Memorial you’ve just been looking at to the Lincoln Memorial. What do the designers of the Lincoln Memorial want to imply about President Lincoln in comparison to President Grant?

Finally let’s look at Ulysses S. Grant’s name

Did you know his name was not originally Ulysses? When he went to West Point the admissions officer wrote his name down wrong, and he decided to keep the name. As a result of his name he earned several different nicknames.

  • U.S. Grant (which many said stood for United States Grant)
  • Unconditional Surrender Grant (after a battle where he demanded unconditional surrender)
  • Uncle Sam Grant
  • Useless S Grant (by his brother)
  • Of course he also earned the less than positive nickname of “The Butcher.”

Take a moment to look at your name and your initials what nicknames might you earn in your life? Which nicknames might you be proud of? Grant was very proud of being called Uncle Sam Grant, and US Grant.

Motivate Your Child Action Plan: Incredible Parenting Resource

May 25, 2015 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

motivate your child disclaimer

I saw the opportunity to obtain a copy of Motivate Your Child Action Plan for review and jumped at the chance. I have been a mother for 12 years and we now have four children ages 12 and under. Each of these children are very different in personality, mannerisms, and their hearts. I am way behind in reading and researching about parenting I will admit. Since we do not attend a church on a regular basis we really are not getting an spiritual guidance in our parenting and we are beginning to flounder. I feel so overwhelmed most days homeschooling and trying to create a blog that earns enough money to help build a financial cushion to reach our dreams. Throw in a child with Type 1 Diabetes, a Diva, two very smart for their age red heads and a hubby with some mystery ailments and most days I am just grateful to have a bed to flop in at the end of the day.

MYCAP on my Summer Reading List

I do not want to be praying all day that we just survive the day. I do not want to be ready to pack up and head for the hills. I want to enjoy my children and really get to know their hearts and thoughts and talents and inspirations. I want them to know I have their backs but that we also have high expectations for them to reach for the stars. I want them to look back at their childhoods and know that mommy and daddy loved them.

I feel that Motivate Your Child Action Plan will give us the tools to be the best parents we can be while leading our children in a more positive parenting direction. I am wanting results without all the yelling, name calling, and temper tantrums (not always by the children mind you!) I know that having an example and game plan grounded in God’s word will make all the difference in the world. It’s a piece of the puzzle that has been missing from our family and I want it found.

The MYC Action Plan book gives parents the tools to implement the same process to produce change in any family. Twelve audio presentations compliment the material in each chapter and can be downloaded to the device. It’s just like having Dr. Turansky and Mrs. Miller right there to assist with the development of your plan via Biblical Parenting website.

The Motivate Your Child Action Plan will give you the tools to address sibling conflict, poor school performance, disrespect, laziness, procrastination, sloppy work, emotional outbursts, self-centeredness, and so much more.

This approach will equip and empower you to parent any age child, from toddlers to teenagers, and beyond. If you have a problem to address in your child, this book can help you envision the solution and then lay out the steps to get there.

With any new habit or character training it will take hard work and time for a positive change to take place. According to the book details you need 40 days till you work through the book and work through a problem or challenge. This book is not a one time through and then place on the self to be forgotten. I have four children and each one has a couple different areas of their life that need improvement so I think this book may easily become a tattered mess in a hurry!

Join me as we start a parenting journey to reach the heart of each child in a biblical manner!

Impromptu Overnight Getaway and We Love Weekends

May 22, 2015 By Thaleia

I will have to admit I was ecstatic when I checked our bank account to find our tax return money. It just so happened to be a Friday that hubby had taken a vacation day for a homeschool event. We ended up skipping that event to take a quick 24 hour overnight getaway.

Impromptu Getaway

We headed through Wendy’s Drive thru and were on our way! Of course we were down the road just 10 minutes when a potty break was called which led to Beanie Boo’s! My niece first introduced us to Beanie Boos a couple of years ago but usually they are $10-$12 a piece. This Circle K Filling Station had them for $4.99 each. So we let each kid pick one out. Eldest heard Princess debating on which one to get and she narrowed it down to 2. He picked one of her choices so she could get the ones she wanted. Such a sweet big brother!
