I am so excited to be apart of the 3rd Booking Across the USA blog hop with some other amazing bloggers. This idea come from Jodie of Growing Book by Book! If you missed seeing the previous year’s author’s be sure to hop over and check them all out!
Since we live in Ohio I just figured I would choose an Ohio author. I just so happen to know of an author for children whom I found via Facebook. I wanted to meet up with Aileen Stewart in person but wasn’t able to squeeze the trip into our schedule before this event. She lives less then 3 hours away so I am sure we will meet someday in real-life!
So without further ado I want to introduce you to Aileen Stewart author of Fern Valley, Return to Fern Valley, and coming Fall 2015 Fern Valley Cookbook! She has all sorts of wonderful resources on her website Fun with Aileen which include recipes, coloring pages, and discussion questions. Aileen is also available to teach writing workshop’s or as an author speaker for schools, groups, and library’s.
Fern Valley Book Synopsis:
Fern Valley is home to a group of wonderful animals who have fun and face some of the same problems children everywhere do. Roberta and Mildred Cornstalk are creative chickens dealing with the loss of their beloved granny, and they’re looking for something to do to cheer them up. Want to know what adventures they find? Want to know what happens to Roberta and Mildred’s brother, Edward, when he goes fishing, what birthday surprise is in store for Betsy Woolrich, or what lesson Kimmy Curlytail learns when she keeps something that isn’t hers? Then follow this endearing cast of characters as they enjoy their time together and learn important lessons.
Return to Fern Valley Synopsis:
The Fern Valley Kids are back in twelve new and exciting adventures. Join Mildred and Roberta Cornstalk as they discover a clue hidden inside a library book. Peek into the window of a secret cottage with the lovely Betsy Woolrich. Find out what Jason Curlytail builds from a box, what Alice Redfeather does when she gets locked out of the house, or how Nathan Gruff copes with the news of a new baby.

Extension Activity Ideas:
General theme- Farm Animals
With two boys under Kindergarten age Farm animals are a great and easy thing to learn about. You can talk about animal sounds, mommy and baby, what they eat, where they live and what food they consume or make. Tons of basic learning opportunities surround the FARM!
It just so happens that we love a few other board books about farm animals like Big Red Barn or Millie Moo as well. Lil’ Red got some new “bath toys” that were animals which go nicely with reading Fern Valley. We also own farm babies toob and created a Big Red Barn of our own.
Add a trip to a real farm and your learning will come to life! Make you talk with your child about milk and eggs and butter. Try your hand at homemade butter.
