Boost Your Blog in 100 Days Challenge: SEO for Everyone Day 2

April 4, 2014 By Martiel 5 Comments

Search engine optimization sounds fancy but it doesn’t have to be; I’ve made it super simple. Today you are going to learn about SEO Basics and the 10 fundamentals of what you need to optimize your site. I’ve organized this in a way that you can do one or all of these; it’s totally up to you.

To get started, simply check out the list below and find something you are ready to tackle. Most if not all of these fundamentals you can do in just a few minutes. Which means that in about an hours’ time, your site will be ready to go if you did all of them at once.

10 Fundamentals for Getting Started with SEO

  1. Review all your page URLs. Make sure that your URL is as short as possible AND that you have included keywords in the page title, URL, and listed in the keywords area of your page.
  2. Clean up your keyword list. Review what keywords you aren’t using or don’t use and see if there is a way you can make better use of your keywords on both posts and pages.
  3. Update names of images. SEO also picks up on the name of your image, so make sure that it’s titled to match your post or page.
  4. Don’t overuse keywords. This means, don’t try to insert keywords where they don’t belong in your title, body text, etc. because search engines will know it. Write naturally and insert keywords where appropriate.
  5. Titles should be short and sweet. The standard I like to follow is no more than 65 characters in length.
  6. Use the same name everywhere! No matter where you are, you should be trying to use the same name as your website. So if your website was Sewmantra, then all your usernames, IDs and so on should be that name too.
  7. Use caution when using anchor links. Anchor links can be helpful, but if set up incorrectly they can tell search engines you are over doing it. If you want to use anchor links, read up on them and if in doubt, have a pro help you out.
  8. Is your website mobile friendly? Check it out by visiting Browser Stack
  9. Meta descriptions are important but not vital. Meta descriptions help readers find you but they do not help with SEO. It’s confusing, but they are paired with your search results so that readers can learn about what you offer. Use them; they are helpful to your readers.
  10. Last but not least, SEO is many things… but it isn’t:
  • about buying keywords
  • a fast process
  • hard once you know the basics
  • as difficult as you think to be ranked high if you product good content.

Boost Your Blog in 100 Days Challenge: SEO for Everyone Day 1

April 3, 2014 By Martiel 10 Comments

BB100 SEO 1

This challenge is all about boosting your blog and giving information so you don’t have to hunt or seek it out otherwise. In this portion of the challenge and for the next 9 days, I’ll be talking about search engine optimization (SEO).

For many people starting out, SEO is scary, overwhelming, seemingly unnecessary and generally underutilized. While some will argue that SEO has its pitfalls, it does still have a place in helping drive traffic to your blog and your website. However, what you must understand it that SEO is just another aspect of how you attract your audience; you cannot rely on it solely. You can use it to increase your exposure on search engines, increase your ranking online and boost your online presence overall. As you begin this journey with SEO with me, I want to start by sharing 10 Tips/Lessons I’ve Learned.

10 Tips/Lessons in SEO

  1. Use the free tools out there – there are several very awesome ones!
  2. Google Analytics is great, but it isn’t the end all be all when it comes to tracking your efforts.
  3. Simple, direct and straight-forward keywords that match well with your article will drive more traffic over time.
  4. Your first paragraph matters most, but don’t go overboard with keywords; be natural about it.
  5. Understanding the basics of SEO is a must before you attempt anything more advanced.
  6. When you guest blog, never forget to offer some keywords to help boost the SEO of your host blog and your post.
  7. The more links out there that are tracked back to you the higher ranked and more reputable your site will be considered by search engines.
  8. The name of your image is a factor for SEO too!
  9. Google is the biggest player, but don’t forget that Bing, MSN, Yahoo, and others are players too.
  10. In the end, if what you post or share isn’t compelling, no amount of SEO is going to help you grow.

I’ll be back tomorrow for Day 2 of SEO for Everyone. I’d like to Thank Thaleia Maher of Something 2 Offer for hosting this challenge as well as the other challenge hostesses who are helping to make this event possible. As we come to the close of blog topics I’m ending with my very favorite format for blog posts: reviews. Blog Titles and Topics with Martiel #BB100 Day 9: Frequently Asked Questions

April 1, 2014 By Martiel 2 Comments

BB100 My section 9

Frequently Asked Questions (or FAQs) are super fun and can be a crowd pleaser. I find that the boring and drab version of Q& A can be quite dull but you can totally use this format and jazz it up. For example, if you want to share some interesting facts about social media, you could use a FAQs post.

A word of caution about FAQ posts: if you use these or plan on implementing them, it’s a good idea to make them colorful, fun, easy to read and interesting…. did you catch that last part?

Yes, above all, make your FAQ post interesting. The way you make it interesting is you offer facts on a topic that would be interesting to your audience. For example, if you are a baker you might want to offer a FAQ post on US vs. Metric measuring implements and answer some common questions people face when they use US or Non-US recipes when baking. Here are 10 FAQ topics/titles to help inspire your next blog post.

10 Open-Ended Blog Topics/Titles

  1. Common Baking Questions for US & Non-US Bakers
  2. Finding the Right Bead Size – FAQs
  3. Basic HTML FAQs
  4. Mommy FAQs: The First Year
  5. Non-Toxic & Safe Household Cleaners – FAQs
  6. Math FAQs for Kids
  7. Understanding Photography/FAQs
  8. Adoption – Get the FAQs!
  9. Getting Started with Marketing
  10. Keeping Your Stencils in Shape
