How to Choose a Word of the Year

December 27, 2017 By Thaleia 4 Comments

I know that choosing a Word of the Year is definitely not something new but hearing this phrase each December usually makes me want to crawl under a rock and hide. Seriously! I get upset that I cannot just pick some magic word that will make the next year fall into place. I sometimes just cannot decide where to place the focus in my life if it should be business, marriage or homeschool.

How to Choose a Word of the Year

This year I kinda fell into a word that makes sense and that will help support my Goals for 2018. My Word of the Year for 2018 is INTENTIONAL. My newsletter explains how it came to be which you can read all about my Word of the Year here!

The purpose of this post is to help give you ideas of how to choose a Word of the Year whether you are married or single, whether you homeschool or send your kids off to school, whether you work from home or head to the office or maybe do not work at all. You too can have a Word of the Year that brings you hope and purpose not despair!

Good Choices for your Word of the Year

BELIEVE- “Believe is what it closest to my heart and means the most to my family. Even though I had chosen soar as my word of the year last year, I never felt entirely sure it was the right word for us.” Glenda from The Mommies Reviews

JOY- “After a tough two years, I decided to focus on the word JOY for 2018. It’s my daily reminder to find something good in every single day. I’m keeping a gratitude journal this year (which looks to be just as difficult as the past two) to help me focus.” Tara from Homeschool Preschool is a local blogger friend who is claiming JOY as her word for 2018!

(If you want to create a gratitude journal like Tara then I would recommend the Joy Dare printables that go along with Ann Voskamp’s One Thousand Gifts.)

HARMONY- “Originally I was going to choose “flourish” but it just wasn’t fitting with my thoughts of working on balancing all of the aspects of my life to be a little less chaotic. Then I thought about the word balance for a few days but I really wanted a pretty word, so I that’s when “harmony” came to mind.” Jenny from Faith and Good Works

SOAR- “I usually start praying about it in the fall, asking God to reach me (as only He knows how!). I’ve been doing this for a few years now… This is this year’s post.” Pat from Breakthrough Homeschooling

SURRENDER-“Your word takes the place of a New Year’s Resolution. It’s a word that embodies what you want to be/think/feel/do. Something that you can apply in little ways throughout your life instead of a concrete goal that involves either failure or success.” Dominee from Blessing Manifesting

TEND- “I have been using PowerSheets for years and love choosing a word. This post outlines the process.” Lara from Lara Casey

If you are still not sure how to choose a Word of the Year then check out My One Word by Mike Ashcraft and Rachel Olsen. I will be listening to the audio via Hoopla to learn more about this Word of the Year movement from a Christian perspective.

Resolution is my word for 2018. There are many broken relationships in my life, projects not completed, and things I have avoided. I plan to resolve these issues in 2018.
