Impromptu Fall Nature Hike

October 7, 2014 By Thaleia 9 Comments

The weather turned cold like 20 degrees cooler then the day before and the wind blew in. It’s now truly feeling like Fall. I have also noticed the leaves starting to change colors and drop. What a perfect time for a Fall Nature Hike.

I wanted to get out of the house since the sun was shining and hubby was home. Originally I wanted to go to a festival but by the time we would have gotten there less than 2 hours remained. We loaded up in the van and headed out anyways but I changed our destination to a local park with creek, nature trail, and two small playgrounds.

My goal was to soak up some Vitamin D, walk over crunchy leaves, and let the kids play. A win-win for everyone. Yes, I still got groans from the kids until we turned into the park. I let the big kids walk across the creek and up the creek a ways to “go exploring”. Hubby hung out in the car while Lil’ Red finished his nap and Big Red practiced swinging.

Once the big kids were back from exploring the creek, Lil’ Red woke up and it was time to hit the trails. Princess found tons of acorns and began to collect them, “For a project. I don’t know what, yet but I need lots of big acorns,” she declared. Eldest and Big Red were interested in swinging sticks around and the hopes of being allowed off-trail.

Lil’ Red was trying to run the paved path but fell a few times over all the acorns, leaves, and branches. He was so exited and cute! I looked for a variety of leaves to bring home for a quick leaf study. I stopped along the path to enjoy the song of a variety of birds. One I believe to be a Robin I got a picture of.

Near the end of the path was the 2nd playground where we found a long Sycamore branch which I thought would make an excellent walking stick! Princess had just messaged her grandpa requesting a new “taller” stick since she had outgrown her previous ones! Now hubby can have a new stick as well that should fit him plus the extra might make a nice stick for Lil’ Red or Big Red!

Hope you load up your family and head outdoors to enjoy a nature hike before the bitter cold of Winter settles in. If you’d like to see what we found last year on our First Fall Nature Hike then check it out here:

    Lyli,
Yes, we as a family need more nature and less tech BUT the tech is what is paying the bills, lol.
