Some of Princess’ friends have hamsters so she has been wanting one for probably a year now. The main objective in getting a hamster is keeping a clean room and learning to care for a small pet. We had a dog, Jazz, whom we had to put to sleep October 2013 and we have been pet free except for some caterpillar’s last Fall. I have to admit it has been really nice to not have to care for a pet or find a pet sitter if we are going to be gone for more then 3-4 hours.
She has been diligently keeping her room at bay as well as reading and researching all about hamsters. Last Summer one of the college student’s who works at the library brought her hamster in for another librarian to hamster sit! This of course helped ignite the love of hamsters all over again. (My husband has actually owned two in his lifetime which is very interesting.)
She has a wishlist created on Amazon with all the supplies that a hamster needs likes a cage, bedding, food, food bowl, toys, and water bottle. She has learned all sorts of things about the care and keeping of a hamster. She learned that iceburg lettuce will kill a hamster. She learned that some toys are needed to keep the hamster happy.
It has been very hard to keep telling her that we needed to wait to buy a new pet until after our 5 day vacation. The justification being a new pet would miss her too much and it wouldn’t be fair to the new animal to be left with someone else to care for it.
Guess what we are back from vacation and what was she doing within an hour of being home? You guessed it she was checking the prices and reviews on various cages and homes for hamsters! This girl is quite smart and has heard mom and dad talk about the importance of reading reviews before making a purchase. (Now we have a super busy weekend and may have to put off buying a hamster for a couple of days but it will be within the next week!)
I will keep you all updated on our quest for a new pet with some blog posts and pictures soon I promise!
