Keywords can be super helpful at building your traffic and advancing your blog into stardom. But if you abuse them or practice “keyword stuffing” the search engines will penalize you for it and your audience will quickly catch on. This will result in a blog no one wants to follow, read or have anything to do with… well that might sound a little harsh, but you get the picture.

There aren’t any tricks or special tips to keyword abuse or stuffing. The golden rule of keywords is: DON’T COMMIT KEYWORD ABUSE AND DON’T PARTICIPATE IN KEYWORD STUFFING.

So you know what we are talking about be for you delve into the wonderful world of do’s and don’t’s here are some definitions…

Keyword Abuse: Using keywords and key phrases within your website is an SEO technique to get your website ranking high and easily indexed by Google. (Definition provided by Attorney Marketing Designs).

Keyword Stuffing: An unethical search engine optimization (SEO) technique, which leads to banning a website from major search engines either temporarily or permanently. Keyword stuffing occurs when a web page is loaded with keywords in the meta tags or in content of a web page. The repetition of words in meta tags may explain why many search engines no longer use these tags. (Definition provided by Wikipedia).

Keywords are vital to your SEO strategy. However over the last few years I’ve noticed a low decline in access to quality keyword insights with quick results. In fact, to find information that is both easy and effective, that won’t confuse a beginner, is hard to come by. If you want keywords with value, I am not going to be first to say this, you need to pay for it. Nevertheless, there are some places where you can get keywords without paying but it’s going to be time consuming not to mention, you will have to do some legwork to understand the platform and how to manipulate the search tools. They aren’t going to make it easy for you – Google is the latest of these culprits.

5 Keyword Tools You Can Get for FREE

  1. Google Keyword Planner
  2. Wordstream Keyword Tool
  3. Keyword Eye
  4. Keyword Spy
  5. SEMRush

5 Tips for Utilizing Keywords on Your Blog

  1. Keywords are words, terms, or short phrases your audience uses when searching for your specific content.
  2. Essential places you should put your keywords: title of your post, meta description, h1 heading, the first paragraph of your post.
  3. Try to use your keywords throughout your post. A good percentage of keywords to post text words are approximately 3%. To calculate this use this this caclulator.
  4. If your keywords are great but your content stinks you are wasting your time. (Sensing a theme here?)
  5. Never just randomly place your keyword somewhere in your post text, this is founded upon and search engines will penalize you for it. (I’ll be talking more about this tomorrow!)

Boost Your Blog in 100 Days Challenge: SEO for Everyone Day 2

Search engine optimization sounds fancy but it doesn’t have to be; I’ve made it super simple. Today you are going to learn about SEO Basics and the 10 fundamentals of what you need to optimize your site. I’ve organized this in a way that you can do one or all of these; it’s totally up to you.

To get started, simply check out the list below and find something you are ready to tackle. Most if not all of these fundamentals you can do in just a few minutes. Which means that in about an hours’ time, your site will be ready to go if you did all of them at once.

10 Fundamentals for Getting Started with SEO

  1. Review all your page URLs. Make sure that your URL is as short as possible AND that you have included keywords in the page title, URL, and listed in the keywords area of your page.
  2. Clean up your keyword list. Review what keywords you aren’t using or don’t use and see if there is a way you can make better use of your keywords on both posts and pages.
  3. Update names of images. SEO also picks up on the name of your image, so make sure that it’s titled to match your post or page.
  4. Don’t overuse keywords. This means, don’t try to insert keywords where they don’t belong in your title, body text, etc. because search engines will know it. Write naturally and insert keywords where appropriate.
  5. Titles should be short and sweet. The standard I like to follow is no more than 65 characters in length.
  6. Use the same name everywhere! No matter where you are, you should be trying to use the same name as your website. So if your website was Sewmantra, then all your usernames, IDs and so on should be that name too.
  7. Use caution when using anchor links. Anchor links can be helpful, but if set up incorrectly they can tell search engines you are over doing it. If you want to use anchor links, read up on them and if in doubt, have a pro help you out.
  8. Is your website mobile friendly? Check it out by visiting Browser Stack
  9. Meta descriptions are important but not vital. Meta descriptions help readers find you but they do not help with SEO. It’s confusing, but they are paired with your search results so that readers can learn about what you offer. Use them; they are helpful to your readers.
  10. Last but not least, SEO is many things… but it isn’t:
  • about buying keywords
  • a fast process
  • hard once you know the basics
  • as difficult as you think to be ranked high if you product good content.

Boost Your Blog in 100 Days Challenge: SEO for Everyone Day 1

This challenge is all about boosting your blog and giving information so you don’t have to hunt or seek it out otherwise. In this portion of the challenge and for the next 9 days, I’ll be talking about search engine optimization (SEO).

For many people starting out, SEO is scary, overwhelming, seemingly unnecessary and generally underutilized. While some will argue that SEO has its pitfalls, it does still have a place in helping drive traffic to your blog and your website. However, what you must understand it that SEO is just another aspect of how you attract your audience; you cannot rely on it solely. You can use it to increase your exposure on search engines, increase your ranking online and boost your online presence overall. As you begin this journey with SEO with me, I want to start by sharing 10 Tips/Lessons I’ve Learned.

10 Tips/Lessons in SEO

  1. Use the free tools out there – there are several very awesome ones!
  2. Google Analytics is great, but it isn’t the end all be all when it comes to tracking your efforts.
  3. Simple, direct and straight-forward keywords that match well with your article will drive more traffic over time.
  4. Your first paragraph matters most, but don’t go overboard with keywords; be natural about it.
  5. Understanding the basics of SEO is a must before you attempt anything more advanced.
  6. When you guest blog, never forget to offer some keywords to help boost the SEO of your host blog and your post.
  7. The more links out there that are tracked back to you the higher ranked and more reputable your site will be considered by search engines.
  8. The name of your image is a factor for SEO too!
  9. Google is the biggest player, but don’t forget that Bing, MSN, Yahoo, and others are players too.
  10. In the end, if what you post or share isn’t compelling, no amount of SEO is going to help you grow.

I’ll be back tomorrow for Day 2 of SEO for Everyone.
