It’s Almost Summer Reading Time

May 20, 2014 By Thaleia 10 Comments

Am I the only one that dreams of the glorious adventures to be had during Summer reading time? I consider myself a reader although not very avid anymore. I guess you could say that 4 children can take up a lot of the “spare reading” time. But this Summer I want to read each day just like I expect my children to do.

Tips to Make Summer reading great

[Tweet “Read 8 tips for making Summer Reading fun for the entire family! #bookyoursummer”]

I am a big time planner and get all giddy doing so, but sometimes fail to execute. This Summer I vow to follow through and shake things up a bit. For example my children have never participated in Storytime at the library. (Long detailed/complicated nasty story I will spare the details!) During the Summer I noticed more relaxed “rules” for Storytime which may just allow us to participate with all 4 children! Of course the older ones may be bored but the little guys will love it! (updated… my younger boys did enjoy a session of storytime at our local library when the librarians offered an older kids group!)

I have a few tricks up my sleeve to help us reach some Summer reading goals. I will share some ideas I plan to implement to make Summer Reading fun and worthwhile!

Indoor Easter Egg Hunt

April 16, 2014 By Thaleia 1 Comment

Got super yucky weather scheduled for your Easter egg hunt day? No, problem just keep the egg hunt indoors. We have only had to have indoor Easter egg hunts a couple of times. Once due to freezing cold and once due to a ton of rain. No one wanted to get their nice dress clothes messed up.

Here are some quick tips for Indoor Easter Egg Hunts:

Tip #1 ONLY use plastic eggs. Do not use real eggs. I’ll repeat that DO NOT USE REAL EGGS unless you want to find it a month later by smell. Yep, we made that mistake ONCE while growing up an will never do that again!

[Tweet “Indoor Egg Hunt Tip#1 USE Plastic Eggs ONLY #KBNmoms #Easter”]
Tip#2 Have a couple of other fun activities like coloring pages or bubbles ready. Add a willing uncle to blow said bubbles to make it MORE fun!

Tip#3 Be sure that everyone has similar amount of eggs which equals similar amount of prizes or candy. We have remedied this by giving each child 6 eggs with their own design and then all the plain eggs are bonus or fair game for anyone. This give the kid’s a challenge to find their particular eggs and allow the hiders to hide eggs to the child’s age and ability.

Tip #4 Have fun. Be safe. Check on kids to be sure cousins are playing nice:) You never know how much or little sleep the kids have gotten. Be sure to check the egg hunt area for safety hazards like outlets and poisonous plants before the hunt begins.

Tip #5 Don’t be surprised if a little mess happens! Sometimes little kids get excited and make messes. Be prepared to have some mess depending on the types of items in your baskets and what prizes you give for the egg hunt.

Hopefully these tips will help you have a fun, safe, and successful indoor egg hunt!
