River Exploration and Frog Catching #NatureBookClub {Link Up}

August 20, 2018 By Thaleia 1 Comment

August is now in full force and many families have had children head back to school but for us we are grasping onto the last few weeks of Summer! This month’s theme for the Nature Book Club is Ponds, Rivers, and Streams! We choose books about rivers and ponds to read and are particularly fond of By Pond and River by Arabella Buckley. You can listen to the audiobook via Librivox for free! The first chapter is all about frogs and then it goes onto share about other creatures who live in or near the pond or river. We have shared a tons of free pond resources and ways to learn about frog lifecycle in previous posts but today I am sharing an actual trip to the river!

We love exploring our county park locations since there’s over 20 places that we can walk, hike, explore and play. One of our family’s favorite is a paved bike path that goes along the river just a 5 minute drive from our house. We park in the parking lot and walk a very short distance to access the trail that leads down to the river.

Spring Wildflowers Identification Hike #NatureBookClub {Link Up}

May 25, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

With May almost gone and hot Summer temps on our heals it was definitely time for a Spring Wildflowers Identification Hike. It has rained quite a bit and I knew that more flowers would be popping up over the forest floor. We live in a county with over 20 preserves and reserves and less than an hour from 4 state parks so it was time to visit a few and do some wildflower identification. We cannot pick flowers in these areas so we won’t be using our DIY flower press except for the ones we find at home or grandma’s house!

First we gathered our supplies for a short hike which included out hats, sunscreen, water, magnifying glass, and field guides. We own two field guides specific to wildflowers: Spring Wildflowers of Ohio is free from ODNR and the other we bought called Fandex Family Field Guides: Wildflowers.

Have you been struggling to get your children excited about learning Latin? Maybe you should try reading a classic story to them in Latin. If you pick a familiar story then your children will begin recognizing Latin words more easily.

Did you know that you can find Winnie the Pooh in Latin? Winnie Ille Pu is available on Amazon!

Ways to Use Digital Devices for Homeschool

January 24, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Since this month’s theme is Organization I thought I would share some of the digital devices that we use in our homeschool which is one way we stay organized. First, I should probably share what types of digital resources we use and where we got them, and then proceed to share some free resources we use on each. If you are looking for free apps that we use for homeschool I wrote a post about that called-  Must Have Free Apps for Homeschooling.

We currently use audiobooks, ebooks, and videos in our homeschool. We use both free and borrowed resources as well as CD’s that we own like The Chronicles of Narnia that we earned from My Reader Rewards. (You can earn 50 pts. Per month just for sharing your link on social media!)

We use tablets, mp3 players, old cell phones and our van’s cd player to listen to audiobooks. Since we have many different devices we use what programs and apps they are compatible with. While the idea of having so many “devices” might make your head spin or drive you crazy, I love it! I can easily upload an app or download an ebook to use while “off wifi” so kids can stay on task more easily. The older the device the more limited apps and junk games it will have to offer.

Free Resources for The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

January 8, 2018 By Thaleia 2 Comments

During the month of January we are reading or rather listening to The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis during lunch time. One of our groups on Facebook is doing a book club and this is the book that was chosen. I am delighted in sharing this book with my youngest son as he has not heard it before. Eldest and Princess haven’t heard it since they were in early elementary when Riley read it to them and Riley read it to Big Red last year.

Free Resources for The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

I want to bring the story of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to life a bit for the younger ones as well as do extension activities so that the older ones can count more hours on their high school transcripts. Since I do not have a lot of time or money I thought it would be wise to do a quick Google search and see what I could come up with.
