How I Taught My Son to Read

January 10, 2019 By Thaleia 2 Comments

Teaching a child to read can be a daunting task with all the methods, programs and apps available. I want to put your mind at ease that spending big bucks on a fancy program isn’t necessary. Buying a ton of flash cards or phonics books won’t make it easier. My secret to teaching my middle son to read is very simple. I read to him. Daddy read to him. Grandma read to him. Big sister read to him. Big brother read to him. We listen to lots of audiobooks and include timeless classics.

We read quality books at his comprehension level which is usually much higher than a child’s reading level. We own tons of board books for when our children are infants and toddlers and preschoolers. We own tons of picture books on all sorts of topics. We own leveled readers both of fiction as well as non-fiction. We own chapter books for slightly advanced beginners. But you do not have to own a ton of books to teach your child to read! You can use the library or maybe even swap books with a friend.

Last Minute Ways to Study Advent

December 6, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

I know I know I know. Advent and Christmas come around once a year pretty much the same week and I should be ready by Thanksgiving, right? Well, I do think about different ways to celebrate Advent and think it’s too early to print off advent activity guides or research advent plans or reading guides. Now we are a few days into Advent and have not begun to start a proper Advent study in any way. Does this sound familiar to you or are you one of these super organized mom’s that have it all planned out..

Botany Field Trip Ideas

November 11, 2018 By Thaleia 1 Comment

If you are looking for ways to add field trips into your homeschool or classroom then check out these awesome botany field trip ideas that I have discovered. You will need to research the exact locations in your state but I am sure you will find many more locations then you will have time to visit this year. If you do a quick Google search like “Garden Centers Near Me or Herb Farm Near Me” then you should be able to find some unique botany field trip locations.

If your state college offers an extension office, usually tying in with 4-H, check with them about programs related to gardening and farming for kids as well as cooking the foods grown.

Arboretum–  An arboretum in a general sense is a botanical collection composed exclusively of trees. More commonly a modern arboretum is a botanical garden containing living collections of woody plants and is intended at least in part for scientific study. An arboretum specializing in growing conifers is known as a pinetum. Wikipedia Late Spring visits to an arboretum will yield young leaf buds and blossoms which might delight your children.

Aquaponics Farm– Aquaponics  refers to any system that combines conventional aquaculture with hydroponics in a symbiotic environment. In normal aquaculture, excretions from the animals being raised can accumulate in the water, increasing toxicity.Wikipedia If you have ever wondered how to grow both protein and vegetables then aquaponics might be just the thing you are looking for.

Chocolate Factory Tours

November 6, 2018 By Thaleia 1 Comment

Since we live in a state with multiple Chocolate Factory Tours I thought it might be fun to share each one. Hopefully we will be able to visit a new one this year as part of our Botany curriculum! Eldest and Princess have visited Anthony Thomas Candy Company in Columbus and have sampled chocolates from Winans Chocolates and Coffees many times. Unfortunately Ester Price Candies in Dayton no longer gives tours but they are listed under the virtual tour section since they have a video about their chocolate production.

Free Benefits at Ohio Libraries

October 26, 2018 By Thaleia 2 Comments

Ohio offers a lot of libraries with all sorts of benefits or perks. Many people may only have a single library card from their local library but have you ever considered checking out other libraries in YOUR state? I happen to live in a county that does not offer a county-wide system but each town manages their own library. A few tie in with the larger Dayton Metro Public Library system but even having library cards from all of those isn’t enough for this frugal homeschool mama!

I have super long book lists for my not quite ready to read Kindergarten son to my teen daughter who is searching for a favorite genre. I personally have a list of audiobooks for parenting and homeschool encouragement that I want to tackle which I have added in the files of my Homeschool Beginners Facebook Group.. How can I accomplish this with a meager budget and near empty gas tank?

Why I Own Multiple Library Cards in Ohio

Simply by signing up for a few more library cards online at bigger library systems. I am going to share why I have library cards from Cleveland Public Library, Columbus Metropolitan Library, Toledo Lucas County Public Library and The Public Library of Cincinnati. I only had to actually step foot in a Cincinnati location the other two you can apply online for a card.
