Easy Ways to Learn States and Capitals

April 10, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

If you want to teach your child basic Geography then you will want easy ways to learn states and capitals. I just realized my soon to be 9 year old hasn’t been taught all the names of the states of the USA or their locations! He saw some printables from his older siblings that we had printed but did not use which peaked his interest.

States & Capitals

You can use free resources or paid resources that are printables or hands-on activities to learn more about each state. I will be sharing with you a variety of ways to learn states and capitals that you can use right away!

Homeschooling using Librivox

March 17, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

I’m not quite sure how long ago I found out about Librivox but I love free resources and audiobooks could be expensive if you had to buy them. I enjoy homeschooling using Librivox and using Librivox for personal growth. There’s two different ways that I use Librivox so I will share those with you first.

LibriVox website and App

Homeschooling using Librivox! Easier then you think! #audiobooks #education #freeapp #charlottemasoneducation #ENWC

1. Download audiobooks for old cellphone or iPod via the Librivox website. Yes, we still own old tech that doesn’t have WiFi or use apps and read more about this on our post –Digital Devices for Homeschool. Librivox online works very well with these types of devices. You go to Librivox via PC and find a couple classic Literature titles. Then you can download them chapter by chapter or zip file or via iTunes!

2. Use the free Librivox app or the paid ad-free version to listen to audiobooks on the go! No waiting for your turn like Overdrive. If you download the audiobooks to your device then you won’t use up your data when off WiFi.

How to Start Homeschooling

March 13, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Since we have been homeschooling since 2010 it’s sometimes hard to think about telling others how to start homeschooling. I have recently remembered some words of wisdom when someone asks in a Facebook group about what they need to do to start homeschooling because they are clueless and a little fearful. Usually a family has decided to homeschool, often due to bullying or lack of good educational environment, and there’s not been a lot of time to research. The parent feels that homeschooling would be the best choice for their child and desperately wants some help. I realized that I have some ideas of things that a new homeschool parent might want to consider when homeschooling is on the horizon.

These ideas were copied from an answer I had given to one such parent and then expanded on in order to provide more ideas and guidance. Sometimes a family just needs something different and homescholling will fit the bill for a time whether a semester, year or a lifetime!

Check out the Nature Book Club Facebook Group!

  1. Basic Telescope– You do not need to spend a fortune on a really good telescope to encourage your young sky observer. Starting with a much simpler and cheaper telescope  will allow you to see if a larger investment is worth it down the road. Or you could take your family to an Observatory or Star Gazing event as well as check with your local library to see if they offer equipment to borrow.
  2. Binoculars– Many times during the year you can observe some items in the sky with a pair of binoculars. We own multiple pairs of binoculars and share with you how to pick a pair of binoculars for your child.
  3. Solar System– A nice 3D solar system can bring learning about each planet a little more real to life for your child.
  4. Space Station Play Set- We picked up a set many years ago when our teens were younger. It’s been played with by all four kids! You can choose from a simple toob with 12 items or a huge bucket with 60 pieces.
  5. Books about Sky and Space- There’s a ton of great books both picture books and field guides so I dedicated an entire post to a list of sky and space books for kids.
  6. Constellation Flashcards– This unique tin holds the Qurious Space game that can be played by up to 18 people!
  7. Space Science Kit- The Magic School Bus offers a nice kit called The Secrets of Space for children ages 5-12.
  8. Women of NASA LEGO Set- If your child wants to learn about the women who have been a part of space history then this Ideas Women of NASA LEGO Set.
  9. Field Guide- We own the National Audubon Society First Field Guide Night Sky edition.

I hope your family enjoys some of these sky and space educational items while exploring and learning about stars, planets and the history of space.

Link up your sky and space nature study post during the Nature Book Club on February 20-28!
