Unit Studies in Middle School to Foster Independence {Real Homeschooling for Real Families}

May 27, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Today’s Real Homeschooling for Real Families post is written by Pat from Breakthrough Homeschooling. She is writing about using Unit Studies in Middle School.

Real Homeschool unit studies middle

The middle school years are commonly considered a time of transition in the traditional school setting, and it’s not any different for our homeschools. Our kiddos are moving from the fun and free years of games and play-as-learning, towards the more structured and focused high school years, which are just around the corner.

Frog Life Cycle Drawing and Frog Puppets #NatureBookClub #NatureStudy

May 20, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

This month’s Nature Book Club theme is Amphibians and Reptiles. We tried to find real-life creatures to exam but we were unsuccessful with our busy schedule. We have been successful in the past which you can read our frog catching and river exploration.

frog life cycle books and puppets We own a plastic frog life cycle set and a few books about frogs so we could still learn about them. The books From Tadpole to Frog goes over the life cycle of a frog nicely as does The Magic School Bus Hops Home and Curious George Tadpole Trouble. My boys have enjoyed each of these books.

frog life cycle drawingMy boys love learning about science and using tools like magnifying glasses and life cycle toys for exploration. I set up this activity on our kids picnic table on our front porch since the weather was so nice.

We own many sets of colored pencils from various brands which allowed the boys a nice choice of greens and blues to work with while drawing the frog life cycle. Each child had his own clipboard with plain printer paper so they could work at their own pace and draw what they saw while exploring the frog life cycle set.

I had made felt puppets many years ago while I was in college and decided to complete a set of them for the frog life cycle for my boys to enjoy!

“Give a man fish he will eat for a day.  Teach a man to fish, he will eat for the rest of his life.” Chinese Proverb.  This was our motto and quote when we took our first steps to start homeschooling our kids.  We didn’t want to give our kids education. We wanted to teach them how to learn and give them tools to apply learning so they can learn for the rest of their lives.

In my search for a method to use that fit our reasons for homeschooling, I came across The Well Trained Mind book by Susan Wise Bauer.  Four months later it was confirmed that this book is a real gem and fit our criteria for our homeschool journey.  Susan Wise Bauer said “A classical education is more than simply a pattern of learning, though. Classical education is language-focused; learning is accomplished through words, written and spoken, rather than through images (pictures, videos, and television). “
