What kinds of Christmas Gifts do parents want? Educational toys WITHOUT batteries! I will repeat that for all the grandparents, aunts, or uncles out there buying Christmas Gifts. Do NOT buy gifts with BATTERIES!! Battery operated toys are no fun when the batteries die and can cost a small fortune to keep running with full batteries!

Homemade Christmas Gifts You Can Make Now

September 25, 2014 By Thaleia 3 Comments

Right now is a perfect time to think about making homemade Christmas gifts from Fall Harvest abundance. I recently made homemade applesauce and crockpot apple butter which will make nice Christmas gifts. We have also been harvesting medicinal herbs and plants. I am working on gathering enough to dry and make tinctures, hydrosols, and salves. I can see some of these items making their way into Christmas baskets as well.

I know some people think it’s too early to think about Christmas and I am usually that way BUT you really need to plan ahead before it sneaks up on you. These super simple gifts are great to make now while the Fall Harvest is happening especially the applesauce and apple butter.

Frugal Christmas Tradition Ideas

Frugal Christmas Tradition Ideas

Oh, Christmas time Oh Christmas time Oh how I love Christmas time! I love the sights, the sounds, the smells, and all the wonderful family friendly Christmas traditions that can be had at this time of year. I’ve thought about ways to make Christmas standout in my children’s minds as a time to celebrate Jesus’ birth by making meaningful memories as a family.

I know when people think of Christmas traditions you might think of decorations, candy, recipes, songs, or how you celebrate Christmas day. I think about all the frugal Christmas Tradition activities that can be had. (Yes, I have been known to “drag” our children out the door to participate in an event that I knew would be fun!) Usually my kids thank me afterwards for all the fun they do end up having!
We found a couple local treasures a few years ago that are NOT TO BE MISSED events for our family. Even though they are local to us doesn’t mean you can’t find something similar in your neck of the woods:)

Today I am guest posting over at Frugal Homeschool Family talking about our Frugal Christmas Traditions as part of Heather’s 25 Days of Frugal Christmas!

5 Days of Easy DIY Advent Calendars

Jesse Tree

Oh, boy! Where has the year gone. The Fall comes rolling in and is quickly replaced with the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Thanksgiving is right here and then all the shopping for Christmas really begins. What about Advent? How do you celebrate? Do you need an Easy DIY Advent Calendar? I think about Advent and countdown to Christmas months ahead but do not want to RUSH the season. Then BAM I have to rush to put together something for Advent whether its a Jesse Tree, Advent packages, Nativity scene, special ornaments or little tags.

 Jesse Tree Celebration ideas:

Have you ever heard about the Jesse Tree? Here’s what About.com has to say:

“The Jesse Tree represents the family tree, or genealogy of Jesus Christ. It tells the story of God’s salvation plan, beginning with creation and continuing through the Old Testament, to the coming of the Messiah. The name comes from Isaiah 11:1, “Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.” (NASB)

Each day of Advent a homemade ornament is added to the Jesse Tree, a small tree made of evergreen branches. These symbolic ornaments can each represent a prophecy foretelling of Christ. Other variations include creating ornaments that represent the ancestors in the lineage of Christ, or using the various monogram symbols of Christianity as handmade ornaments.”

I heard about Jesse Tree a couple of years ago. We even tried to give it a try, but got busy with holiday stuff and hubby working past bedtime when in retail. This made it very hard to start a new tradition when I had to try and put three kids to bed AND remember the daily devotion. This year I wanna try something along the lines of an Truth in the Tinsel, Advent or Jesse Tree tradition. Just not sure which, yet! I will definitely post what we do or what we discover.

Here are my 5 favorite Jesse Tree examples:

This is a great idea for any family wanting to create ornaments from clay. They might take a little extra work but would be worth it in the long run.

These ornaments are a variety of cloth, yarn, and other 3D items. So cool and creative to find resources around the house to create these precious ornaments.
