K’s Hamburger Shop #30Places30Days

May 10, 2017 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

One of the oldest restaurants that we know and love in our county is K’s Hamburger Shop. They are famous not only for their hamburgers and deep fried onion rings but for their incredible milkshakes. It’s been a long time since we ate at K’s so we decided to eat a late lunch and enjoy some yummy food!K's Hamburger Shop

Troy-Hayner Cultural Center Troy, Ohio #30Places30Days #HomeGrownGreat

May 9, 2017 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is the main hub for arts and culture in Troy, Ohio. The three story facility offers meeting rooms, ballroom, courtyard, and classroom. It is very popular for Homecoming and Prom pictures as well as smaller wedding parties. I attend meetings for the Miami County Herb Society a handful of time per year located at Troy-Hayner. My daughter takes ballet lessons in the 3rd floor ballroom each week September through May.

The building itself was the home to Mary Jane Hayner and became the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center in 1976. The Center houses historic furnishings and works of art, a Victorian doll house, and a permanent exhibition about the Hayner Distillery Company. There is no admission fee to visit the Center or its exhibits and most musical and family events are free and open to the public.

The current exhibit which just opened May 8 is called FABRICATED IMAGES: Works by the Dayton Printmaking Cooperative and Mythic Silver Studio.

An example of just a few of what the exhibit holds are shown below. Princess took these pictures before her ballet class right after the exibit was installed.

The end of the 2nd floor hallway right at the top of the stairs offers a wonderful full wall gallery area to display all sorts of works of art. This exhibit showcases framed jewelry pieces from the Mythic Silver Studio collection.

Statues of Miami County, Ohio #30Places30Days

May 7, 2017 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Statues represent a great deal of things including events, historical locations and famous people. When you live in an area so rich in history like we do it is easy to find some statues that help tell the story of your towns past. While driving out and about for the #30Places30Days travel challenge I found two statues right in town that I had forgotten all about. See it’s easy to go through your normal routine or your normal route to work or run errands and forget what unusual things are right in your own neck of the woods!

Right downtown on High Street, near the old Piqua Daily Call which is now Winan’s Chocolates and Coffees headquarters, is a statue located near a sign stating “Veterans Memorial Way”. Big Red and Lil’ Red were the only kids with me for this adventure so Big Red stood by this sign.

Linear Park Bike Path Piqua, Ohio #30Places30Days #BikePiqua

May 5, 2017 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Our city has been developing and paving on the bike path for the last decade I believe. Honestly we have never walked or rode the entire loop but Eldest and Princess went on a short ride to Lock Nine and back. They rode together and had a cell phone in case of an emergency while on the bike path.

We do not suggestion children under the age of 12 ride without adults and definitely NOT without a buddy! Since they were familiar with the area and how to get to the bike path and back home I felt comfortable allowing them to go by themselves. I would love to ride as a family but we are still getting enough bikes in the correct sizes for everyone. Big Red and Lil’ Red do not ride without training wheels. Our goal this Summer is to help teach Big Red how to ride without training wheels so we can enjoy the bike path as a family!

Jackson Cemetery Piqua, Ohio #30Places30Days

May 4, 2017 By Thaleia 2 Comments

One of the most historical cemeteries in my area I would say has to be the Jackson Cemetery. It was part of the town that was called Rossville and where the Randolph Slaves from Virgina came and settled after being deemed free. You can faintly see the word “African” above the Jackson Cemetery sign which is beginning to fade over time.
