Fundraising for your Charity with CustomInk!

Fundraising may become very near and dear to my heart since Eldest has Type 1 Diabetes and JDRF needs to fund a cure! I am starting off by partnering with CustomInk for those who are needing to get team apparel made. We have not even been able to wrap our brains around all the ways that a little bit of money can go a long way to make finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes a reality during my son’s lifetime. We have only been dealing with his diagnosis since December 2014 so things are still pretty new.

I am using a picture of my Type 1 Diabetic son checking his blood sugar levels while in the middle of a huge grocery store to help raise awareness. We had made a day trip to a health fair that was held at Jungle Jim’s International Market. After trying all sorts of healthy and gluten-free items we headed into the store to buy some of the things we had sampled. My son needed to check his blood sugar to be sure he wasn’t too high or low. We are still figuring out how small snacks and exercise affect his BG levels.

12/13/14 The ER, DKA, and Diabetes Diagnosis (Part 4) FINALE

Thanks for sticking with my long winded story about Eldest spending four days in the PICU and Children’s hospital. Ironically he is the only one that has been hospitalized now TWICE!

So we are waiting around on day three of our hospital stay to get transferred out of the PICU and onto the 3rd floor regular wing. Eldest did not have quite the appetite that they wanted him to have so we were waiting and biding our time until he was well enough to be transferred. His blood glucose numbers were not quite regulating the way they had wanted. We had been giving him some insulin at this point and checked his fingers a few times as well.

His first official meal was ordered BEFORE I arrived at the hospital. I looked at it in surprise: personal pizza, grapes, and carrots! Okay for a kid that had not eaten in over 3 days I was not a happy camper! He was throwing up the last day he remembered at home. Why on earth would they let him order a pizza? I looked at the dried out carrots and inspect the slightly shriveled grapes. I then inspect them further and find one with mold on it! I WAS LIVID!!

12/13/14 The ER, DKA, and Diabetes Diagnosis (Part 3)

Welcome back to Day 3 of our grueling adventure of discovering our oldest son has Type 1 Diabetes. He was settled into the PICU for 3 days for the critical care and round the clock monitoring to get his levels regulated. His blood sugar levels were off the charts, meaning a regular blood glucose meter could not take an accurate reading. This resulted in hourly blood work done by the lab tech until his BG was under 350. He had various IV fluids due to severe dehydration and his potassium, sodium, etc were not right. We got very little sleep with the nurse in his room almost constantly for the first 3-4 hours checking vitals, measuring urine output, checking on the alarms that seemed to go off quite frequently, etc. This was quite nerve-racking to be within five feet of your child and NOT really be able to do anything for him. Just hold his hand during labs and be sure he knew we were there although he was sedated to help keep all the tubes and lines in place.

12/13/14 The ER, DKA, and Diabetes Diagnosis (Part 2)

Okay, so where did I leave off about our 12/13/14 story. Yes, that’s right we were at the ER and doctors and staff where swarming around my oldest son. The Main ER doc says she wants to intubate him. Another doc in a long white coat says she called Children’s and Careflight is on the way.

Okay, now things are really getting crazy and scary and we are a little out of the loop. I can tell from the looks on their faces that this is very serious but that they do not want us to get hysterical. Rest assured we did not get hysterical. I got mad when I couldn’t reach grandparents. I got concerned for Lil’ Red having to stay away from mom at almost 16 months. We were upset with ourselves for not bringing him in earlier that day. We were thankful Big Red and Princess were already settled in at the other grandma’s house.

Sometimes you joke about significant dates in History and how you will always remember where you were like 9/11 when hubby and I were stuck in Vegas for 3 extra days. I could tell you all about the tiny hotel room and how I flipped on the tv to see replays on the first Tower being taken down. I can tell you in great detail all about the fun we had driving around in a rented convertible after we had to turn our regular rental in,etc. But I will save those details for another post someday.
