What is Preschool Prep?

Do you have a young child or two who has outgrown Tot School and is ready for Preschool? Have you looked at all the free online choices during your preschool preparation? Does thinking about preschool curriculum make your head spin? Well, I know that the amount of free “Letter of the Week” and “Themed” curriculum is astounding.

I am creating the Preschool Prep series to help other moms and caregivers out! I have spent lots of time researching and planning for Preschool for Lil’ Red and I want to pass on this wealth of knowledge and resources to my readers!

I plan to share a variety of ideas and ways to prepare yourself, your environment, and your child for preschool in a multi-part series. I could create a super long and over whelming post with tons and tons of ideas, but I do not want to add frustration to your Preschool Prep situation. I want to share ideas for learning letters, numbers, colors, shapes, name recognition, character studies, etc. I will share with you very simple activities you can create yourself or some items you could look for during garage sale season. I am hoping to lessen your time and the amount of money you spend by sharing what I am doing.

Art and Music

First off you may be wondering “Why Art and Music for Preschool?” Well, lots of reasons. Just a few that come rolling off the top of my head- gross motor, fine motor, spatial awareness, self-esteem, and a sense of accomplishment. More importantly things like “hand-eye coordination” and “crossing the mid-line” may not happen for all children easily. These tasks help strengthen the connections across both side of the brain allowing for a child to learn more easily!

Preschool Prep: Curriculum

Does thinking about preschool curriculum make your head spin? Well, I know that the amount of free “Letter of the Week” and “Themed” curriculum is astounding.

I am hoping to lessen your time and the amount of money you spend by sharing what I am doing.

Why plan a Preschool Curriculum?

Since Lil’ Red is now three it is time we move beyond the dabbling in Tot School and begin Preschool Preparations NOW before baby #4 arrives in August. Not too long ago I realized Lil’ Red does recognize a large amount of letters but not all. I do know that he does not know all the sounds or uppercase and lowercase. He amazes me each day with his ever expanding vocabulary, his counting, and color recognition.

I have to be honest and tell you I have not decided on an exact “Curriculum” for preschool or even one specific curriculum. There are lots of reasons not only because I’m a little eclectic and ADD but it’s very hard to choose just one. Plus a lot of other factors play a part in this decision:

1) New baby due in August and would like to re-use some of the same items with him.

2) Not sure how much Lil’ Red will learn and grow over the summer.

3) Gotta think what I can use with Classical Conversation Nursery kids ages 12 months to  3 1/2 years that I provide care for once a week.

4) Do not have a huge budget to buy tons of new things.

5) Do not have lots of storage space.

6) I do have lots of items I may have forgotten about from my college days.

7) Can only print and laminate so many things before I run out of laminating sheets see #4.

How about I just share some really great Preschool Curriculum’s I have found online and save you the time from searching? Sounds so good doesn’t it. Think about what your goal is for preschool and maybe even consider giving your child an assessment in order to know where to begin.

LullaBible with CD Review & Giveaway

LullaBible, Stephen Elkins

I’ve got another Tommy Nelson book review and giveaway for you! Gotta love these great spiritually inspiring selections:) More to come over the next couple weeks. (Got a little behind in my reviews with my pregnancy and am making up for lost time:)

DESCRIPTION:

The LullaBible is a great gift for first-time mommies, baptisms, or dedications.

This precious book and CD is a must-have for every nursery. Because each of the lullabies delivers a message of God’s love from the Bible, little ones can fall asleep listening to the comforting assurance of God’s promises.

Beautifully illustrated, the LullaBible is a timeless treasury of stories and verses for parents and children to share. Recommended for ages 0-4. Depicts sweet, pastel illustrations for a child’s first steps toward spiritual growth.

REVIEW:

I saw this as an option for review and jumped at the chance since Big Red is not yet 3 yrs. old and baby #4 is on the way! I know this Bible and CD will be a great bonding activity for both littles. Lil’ Red loves music and I knew the songs would be wonderful. (We own another Bible with songs also created by Stephen Elkins and really enjoyed it!)

This is not just a Bible but a keepsake journal for mom’t to add their thoughts and memories. What a great way to remember the life of your baby or young child while they are still little. It is too precious a time NOT to record at least some of those moments that you share with your young child.

Would you like to view some of the pages inside? Check out this wonderful full-color preview!

Jesus Calling for Kids Devotional Review & Giveaway

Jesus Calling for Kids Devotional

Review & Giveaway

Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions For Kids, Sarah Young

REVIEW:

Since I had already purchased the Jesus Calling for adults last year I jumped on the chance to check out the Jesus Calling for Kids version. This version is a hardcover book that is recommended for ages 5-10. We are really out of habit for devotions and Bible reading and I thought having something similar for both mom and kids might help keep us all on track!

We love that it has a gentle voice and great ways to connect to your child’s heart. Short easy reads help to make daily readings go a little faster for little ones and are great for independent readers.

The hardcover is very sturdy and will take lots of wear before falling apart!

DESCRIPTION:

Devotions written as if Jesus is speaking directly to a child’s heart.

Based on her original Jesus Calling, this version has been adapted in a language and fashion that kids and tweens can relate to their everyday lives.

After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to listen to God with pen in hand, writing down what she believed He was saying to her through Scripture. Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her devotionals.  They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling.  It is Sarah’s fervent prayer that our Savior may bless readers, and now young readers, with His presence and His peace in ever deeper measure.

Not sure if this would be right for your kids? Well, Tommy Nelson has an awesome preview for you to check this book out!

Potty Training On the Go!

Potty Training On the Go!

potty training on the go

Do you hear the familiar “Mommy, I gotta go potty?” every time you are in a store? Encouraging your little one to go potty can be a daunting task when the facilities are not up to your cleanliness standards. Potty training is a fact of life. So what do you do?

Well, I have come up with some options for you. Please do not laugh but they are the ones I could think of off the top of my head. We have not had to potty train anyone is over 5 years.

These are your three options:

1. Leave your potty training child home until potty trained. Not likely unless you have a  full-time nanny or live in grandparent!

2. Pack a small potty in your car and try to set your child on it each and every time you arrive at your destination. Drag the potty with you which is fine if you are at grandma’s, visiting friends, a park,or at church. Not very practical at the grocery store or in the snow or rain unless you are driving a 12 passenger or 15 passenger van!

3. Use a potty cover. Never heard of them? Well, it is very similar to the adult paper potty covers, BUT they include a longer front and sides to help protect your little ones legs and hands from touching the potty! Super great invention for busy families on the go that are concerned about sanitation. These potty covers are not wimpy or easily torn.

Potty Cover paper potty cover

I have a potty cover packed in my purse and the rest will be packed in our 72 hr. kits or on-the-go field trip bag. (Just not sure if we are ready for the potty seat in the back of the van since it will require a major overhaul of the “trunk” area contents.) Potty Cover’s are a great idea. My son wants to hold onto the toilet seat or try to stand up and pee. He is not quite tall enough but the day will come when he is. Potty Cover’s will help keep the germs done and the potty experiences more pleasant.

Description:

PottyCover is a disposable toilet seat cover for children that covers the sides and the front of the toilet, to keep away germs at public rest-rooms.  It is made of non-woven fabric coated with a layer of plastic, creating a waterproof barrier between the toilet and the child. This product has the largest coverage of all seat covers on the market and for added convenience, each seat cover is individually packaged in a small, easy to open bag that makes it super easy to always keep one or two in a purse or a back pocket.

Using a public rest-room with a young child could be very stressful, but with PottyCovers the whole family can feel safe knowing that even at the filthiest bathrooms they will be protected from germs. We designed this product for kids, but it has become a must-have travel item for many of our adult customers.

Disclaimer: I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
