Emergency Preparedness: Being Pregnant or With a Newborn

March 22, 2013 By Thaleia 3 Comments

Emergency Preparedness:

Being Pregnant or With a Newborn

How on earth does a pregnant woman or mom of a newborn prepare for an emergency? Do you have an emergency kit of any kind? This could be a reality for my family and for many young families that we know. I know we take for granted being less than a 5 minute drive from over a dozen stores that sell food, diapers, wipes, etc. BUT what happens if you cannot get to the store? What if the power is wiped out due to high winds or ice? Shelves may sit full of useful products but without the power to run a register or the internet for the computers you are SUNK!

Emergency Preparedness: Do your Research (Become a Prepper)

Emergency Preparedness:

Do your Research (Become a Prepper)

I’ve been spending quite some time researching all sorts of topics to do with Emergency Preparedness. I want to prepare but I want to be informed as to why and how my family can prepare. I want to be assured I have thought things through and not just jumped onto the bandwagon. I have joined a local group of families that are learning about Emergency Preparedness and Homesteading skills. I have volunteered to teach about 72 Hr. Kits or Bug Out Bags as you may have heard them called!

Eldest with Pellet Gun {Spcie Up Your Homeschool}

{Spice Up Your Homeschool} PE: Pellet Guns

This post has been scheduled for over 2 months, just so you know. We also feel that proper gun safety and usage is a key component to raising responsible adults. Guns and weapons on are the cusp of controversy among many families not just the homeschool community. I realize this may be a sensitive issue, but please remember there are many people who use guns and arrows as a source for food.

I know adults who flinch at the site of any weapon even a water pistol nevertheless a pellet gun. My husband took point on this activity with regards to setting up a safe area to shoot in our backyard. We went over safety precautions, rules, and what equipment is REQUIRED to be worn each and EVERY time the pellet gun is in use.

Do not think pellet guns are just for boys. Princess enjoys shooting just as much as Eldest. Lil’ Red will have to wait until ODNR Skills Day next September to have a chance to shoot again. (This event was sponsored by trained and certified professionals in a controlled environment for learning and safety exploration.)

What are the benefits of owning or using a pellet gun?

Well, a huge list of great skills but here’s just a few of them. First and foremost SAFETY and responsibility. Teaching proper use of any tool or equipment foster a great sense of pride and allows the child to take responsibility for his/her actions. Second, hand/eye coordination which is important for writing and doing well in school and life.

Does your local Natural Resource office offer classes for hunter safety that your child might like? What about learning shooting skills for a 4-H project? Do you know of people who hunt for food? What great opportunities to talk with your children about proper gun care and use.

Digging Deeper: Controversial Topics

Digging Deeper: Controversial Topics

Digging Deeper: Controversial Topics on something2offer.com

I have not thought to delve into controversial topics until recently and here is why:

A dear friend of mine was very impressed with my blog so far. We had talked about it while are children visited and played over the summer during our homeschool “break”. She researched and thought about starting a website, but I had actually taken the plunge in a lifestyle mommy blog.

There was a question posed by this same friend of mine. Are you going to delve into those controversial topics such as vaccination or circumcision? To be honest I had not even thought about it. It’s not that I am afraid to go there. I guess I just do not want to get caught up in personal debate and all the drama and hard feelings often associated with these topics. I’ve got enough drama and stress in my REAL-LIFE to bring drama into my bloggy world! Yes, I do realize that hot topics often drive lots of traffic with all sorts of heated topics, but I am just not quite ready to go there, yet. I am going to work on my positions before delving into those hot topics. Hope this doesn’t disappoint you dear friend, but I am working up to it!

(Ironically the day or 2 after I wrote this post, initially, I signed up to review 31 Days to GREAT Sex for Married Couples!)

Here’s what I will say for now:

We had made our choice about circumcision with our first son, after much debate and research between my husband and myself. (We are not Jewish so we are under no religious obligations to choose circumcision.) So with our 2nd son, we made that same choice easy peasy! We made our choice and we encourage other parents to make an INFORMED decision not just do what everyone else does or what the doctor says (unless there’s truly a medical reason necessitating a certain choice).

Vaccination controversy made us “fire” a pediatrician when she made us feel like horrible parents if we did not vaccinate on her/CDC’s schedule. No matter how much you plead or argue with a person they will always make their own choice.

The parents I am really scared for are all those that DO NOT RESEARCH or read ANYTHING about the health and well-being of their children. Those poor children grow up in a house where parents just do what the doctor or grandma recommends. Most likely experiencing knee-jerk reactionary decisions! No real thought goes into it on the parents end. They act like sheep and just go with the crowd. SHAME ON YOU!  If you are one of THOSE parents, please take a moment and research your options for health care, education, and spiritual growth. YOU ARE THE PARENT and IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to do your BEST in raising your child.

So this will be my starting point from which I will then begin to post controversial post topics in the future. I have NOT determined a set platform for my blog. Right now I am still putting feelers out to see what resonates with those readers who have found my blog.

Please feel free to leave a comment or ask a question or message me on Facebook if you’d like a certain controversial topic discussed. If you would like to guest post please let me know what topic you think my reader’s would like to learn from you!

10 Steps to Getting Prepared for an Emergency

10 Steps to Getting Prepared for an Emergency

This list is a simple way for our family to prepare for an emergency and start our 72 hr. kits. I have thought about it many times and keep putting it off due to cost, space, or the fact that relatives nearby had extra clothes for my kids. Since the kids have grown and the relatives no longer have those extra sets of clothes I thought it best to really get prepared for our selves. We live in the Midwest so power outages, gas leaks, or being snowbound would be most likely the type of emergency we would encounter.
