Located about 30 minutes or so from Cleveland is a huge state park called Punderson State Park. It’s nestled into the Ohio countryside between Newberry and Burton off Rt. 87.
One thing I have learned from this trip is to research, ask questions, and then double check the facts. I had called the main desk at Punderson Lodge and thought that there was a laundry service on the premises to find out that it was closer to 7 miles down the road in Burton. Also remember that places like this are for those wanting to relax so some things like meal service runs on a leisurely time schedule. Do not wait until you or your kids are really hungry to place a meal order otherwise you might have an unpleasant mealtime on your hands.
The cabins themselves are very nice in both size and layout. The floors walls and furnishings are all newer. Each queen size bed came with two standard pillows that were really comfy since they were flatter then most hotels super puffy ones. The beds were made with a sheet and two blankets which proved the utmost comfort for the changing temperatures overnight.
When we first arrived inside the cabin the thermostat was set at 51 degrees but the temperature was reading 45 degrees and the battery sign was blinking. I immediately turned on the heat to 68 degrees and headed up to the Lodge for maintenance. I got to the Reservation Desk and the maintenance guy was there. He said he would be right down and he was at our cabin within 5 minutes of my return. He replaced the batteries and the cabin’s temperature was set to a comfortable level.
The outdoor pool is built into the hillside and has a very nice concrete area surrounding it. There seemed to be plenty of tables with umbrellas as well as lounge chairs. The restrooms at the pool included shower facilities which are very nice for anyone needing to rinse off before or after a swim. My kids were brave enough to go all around the edge of the pool even in the deeper 8 ft end.
Marina: I did a very quick drive by of the marina and took a pic from my van. Since we have children ages 2-12 we thought it would be best to skip any water activities that aren’t part of a planned event.
Hiking Trails: There are oodles of hiking trails as well as bridle trails all throughout the Punderson State Park.
Disc Golf: We did check out a little bit of the disc golf course and it’s definitely neat. It has three difficulty levels to keep everyone challenged no matter what your skill level!
Basketball Courts: I saw at least two separate basketball courts that could be used during your stay.
Volleyball Courts: There were some sand volleyball courts across the parking lot near the Lodge but we didn’t have a chance to enjoy those due to time constraints. They appeared to be well-kept and ready for a good dig!
