Ohio Barn Quilt Driving Tours

September 1, 2018 By Thaleia 4 Comments

Barn Quilt driving tours have been around for over a decade in Ohio but did you know that over 15 counties offer self-guided driving tours? Gathering research and information for this post was fun since I learned a lot about each county and how their barn quilt trails all got their start. The whole thing began back in 2005 in Adams County when Donna Sue Groves had a plan to honor her mother and the barn quilt trails began!

We just happen to live in a county that offers a barn quilt tour and have stopped at many of them over the past five years or so. My youngest boys thought I was crazy at first pulling into a driveway of someone we did not know just to stop and take a picture. Soon they learned and understood that it was okay for us to go exploring the location of each barn quilt as long as we minded our manners.

DIY Herbalism Course {Homeschool High School} #DIYHerbalismCourse

August 28, 2018 By Thaleia 4 Comments

If you have been reading my blog for anytime at all or know me personally then you know that I am uber frugal. Creating a DIY high school herbalism course seemed very fitting since Princess wants to earn high school credits and I felt like this might be my last chance to learn with her intensely. I have been wanting to learn more about herbs, herbalism, herbal medicine, plant identification and just general natural health concepts for over 4 years. I decided this year it was time to dust off the books, print off the pdf’s bought or free ebooks and start studying.

2018-2019 Homeschool Curriculum General Overview

August 23, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Each year during the Spring and Summer I think about the upcoming Fall and what it will bring for my children’s educations via homeschool curriculum. I try to look for new and interesting things to learn, study and experience. This year will be our first year that all four children will be “in school”.

homeschool curriculum 2018-2019

We started last year all learning the same Science and History which seemed to make my life a little bit easier. Last year we learned American History and Anatomy (loosley using Guest Hollow’s outline) while this year we will focus on Ancient History and Botany. We will use Mystery of History 1 and Guest Hollow’s Ancient History for book, video and activity ideas as well as Guest Hollow’s Botany.

August 20, 2018 By Thaleia 1 Comment

August is now in full force and many families have had children head back to school but for us we are grasping onto the last few weeks of Summer! This month’s theme for the Nature Book Club is Ponds, Rivers, and Streams! We choose books about rivers and ponds to read and are particularly fond of By Pond and River by Arabella Buckley. You can listen to the audiobook via Librivox for free! The first chapter is all about frogs and then it goes onto share about other creatures who live in or near the pond or river. We have shared a tons of free pond resources and ways to learn about frog lifecycle in previous posts but today I am sharing an actual trip to the river!

River Exploration

We love exploring our county park locations since there’s over 20 places that we can walk, hike, explore and play. One of our family’s favorite is a paved bike path that goes along the river just a 5 minute drive from our house. We park in the parking lot and walk a very short distance to access the trail that leads down to the river.
