Spring Wildflowers Identification Hike #NatureBookClub {Link Up}

May 25, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

With May almost gone and hot Summer temps on our heals it was definitely time for a Spring Wildflowers Identification Hike. It has rained quite a bit and I knew that more flowers would be popping up over the forest floor. We live in a county with over 20 preserves and reserves and less than an hour from 4 state parks so it was time to visit a few and do some wildflower identification. We cannot pick flowers in these areas so we won’t be using our DIY flower press except for the ones we find at home or grandma’s house!

First we gathered our supplies for a short hike which included out hats, sunscreen, water, magnifying glass, and field guides. We own two field guides specific to wildflowers: Spring Wildflowers of Ohio is free from ODNR and the other we bought called Fandex Family Field Guides: Wildflowers.

DIY Flower Press #NatureBookClub {Link Up}

May 20, 2018 By Thaleia 4 Comments

Spring is a good time to make a DIY Flower press from recycled materials as wildflowers are in bloom! May’s theme for Nature Book Club is wildflowers but we also have a HUGE resource post all about parts of a flower from a few years ago!

One thing I have come to appreciate about having four children over a decade is that the younger ones haven’t done everything that the big kids have. This means that I get to relive and share activities over again. This is especially fun for me and nature activities.

Lil’ Red loves nature and looking at our flowers both cultivated and wildflowers. He is more then happy to collect flowers or leaves for homemade medicine. It just occurred to me that he had never pressed leaves or flowers. Since he is my hands-on learner I knew he would enjoy this activity.

We own a couple of books about wildflowers that are fun to use to identify plants that we do not know. One called Spring Wildflowers of Ohio is free from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and can be viewed online or saved as a pdf! You can also check out the Wildflower Bloom report for Ohio.

Preparing for a Family Bike Ride

May 8, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Since Big Red has learned to ride a bike without training wheels it is time we go on a family bike ride! We will need to check that each person has a bike and that the bike trailer’s tires are still holding air which Lil’ Red will ride in. Since that means we have 5 bicycles to check it could take all week long to get everything prepared. We also buy our bike tires and tubes online since it’s cheaper so we have to factor in some additional time for shipping.

[Tweet “Do you have tips for preparing for a family bike ride? READ our TIPS for getting bike ride ready!”]

Even if it’s too hot or too rainy for a family bike ride this week we will prepare for a family bike ride by doing the following things:

Ways to Prepare for Garage Sale Season

Spring is almost her and that means that Garage Sale season is almost upon us as well. With so many weeks of garage sales in a row a busy mom MUST prepare for garage sale season ahead of time! We love community sales as well as BIG sales like Route 127 Yard Sale. We even plan to go to the Route 40 Sales Road Trip style!

I am sharing my best tips in order to prepare for garage sale season while not going crazy or over budget. If you are like my family then you count on finding clothes, shoes and sports equipment at garage sales in order to save your family a ton of money. We also find homeschool items and educational toys for our children. Sometimes if we are really lucky we find birthday gifts and Christmas presents as well!
