Groundhog Day Books for Kids #booklist #naturestudy

January 17, 2019 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Since we homeschool I honestly do not know if my kids even know about groundhog day. I mean my teens probably have heard of it but not quite sure Big Red and Little Red have heard about it. Since we do live a few blocks away from where we have often spotted a real-life groundhog I thought it would be fun to create a book list to learn more.

How I Taught My Son to Read

January 10, 2019 By Thaleia 2 Comments

Teaching a child to read can be a daunting task with all the methods, programs and apps available. I want to put your mind at ease that spending big bucks on a fancy program isn’t necessary. Buying a ton of flash cards or phonics books won’t make it easier. My secret to teaching my middle son to read is very simple. I read to him. Daddy read to him. Grandma read to him. Big sister read to him. Big brother read to him. We listen to lots of audiobooks and include timeless classics.

We read quality books at his comprehension level which is usually much higher than a child’s reading level. We own tons of board books for when our children are infants and toddlers and preschoolers. We own tons of picture books on all sorts of topics. We own leveled readers both of fiction as well as non-fiction. We own chapter books for slightly advanced beginners. But you do not have to own a ton of books to teach your child to read! You can use the library or maybe even swap books with a friend.

January Homeschool Mamas Book Club: The Unhurried Homeschooler #hsmamasbookclub

December 27, 2018 By Thaleia Leave a Comment

Welcome to the first month of Homeschool Mama’s Book Club! This month we will be reading The Unhurried Homeschooler by Durenda Wilson. I must have been living under a rock or something because I had not heard about this wonderful book until some homeschool mama friends suggested it as a book title choice! I am so very glad that it was voted as the top pick for our inaugural homeschool mamas book club.

Meet Durenda Wilson author of The Unhurried Homeschooler

Durenda Wilson

Durenda has been homeschooling for over 23 years and is a mom of eight (born 1991-2004).  She has graduated 5 so far with two still at home. She’s been married to Darryl for 29 years and they have 6 grandkids.  Durenda is convinced that home educating is an incredible blessing, but only if we don’t let it hold us hostage to unnecessary expectations and notions of what it “should” look like. The heart of her message is to encourage families to think outside the box and take time to enjoy this amazing journey.  She firmly believes that children are naturally curious and if parents keep things simple and unhurried, their kids will become lifelong learners.

Durenda has written The Unhurried Homeschooler-a simple, mercifully short book on homeschooling and Unhurried Grace for a Mom’s Heart-31 days in God’s Word.  She is the owner/host on her podcast Durenda Wilson and blog, Durenda Wilson.com

You can order your book on Amazon either Kindle or Paperback version or purchase a copy on Thriftbooks. If you own a Kindle then you might want to check out Kindle Unlimited since many of the selections we will read for #hsmamasbookclub will be available on Kindle Unlimited.

These are the same graphics that I will share on the Homeschool Beginners Instagram and in the Homeschool Beginners Facebook Group. Please feel free to join me in either location for book discussions! Make sure you grab your copy of the book and have your notebook or journal ready as we embark on this new journey in 2019!
